Golfing in Hawaii

My husband and I are both golfers and are planning a golfing holiday to Hawaii next year. What Island do you think has the best courses? We are not necessarily looking for the most challenging as I am a fairly new golfer. We will problably go to two Islands on this trip. Thanks for any help.

Tough question Liz, Hawaii has some of the best golf anywhere.

For a truly top-notch golfing experience, I can recommend nothing more highly than the Prince Course at the Princeville resort on Kauai. Every year this course is rated number 1 in Hawaii, and is consistently highly rated against all the courses in the world. Plus it is georgeous, just like the entire Princeville resort. Trust me

I'd agree Kauai has the prettiest if not the most challenging, but the Big Island has to be tops for sheer variety and challenge. You might check out the Mauna Lani complex (condos, hotel, and villas, with different price ranges) on the BI. That is pretty much Golf Central, with a variety of challenge levels on the courses.

Maui - the 3 Wailea courses are very nice (the blue, gold and green courses - each have a different difficulty rating) and the Kapalua course is absoulutely gorgeous!

Liz:
We just got back from Kauai and Maui and I played 10 times on the 2 islands. We have visited all the islands and IMO the most enjoyable golf is on Maui and the Big Island.
Maui- In order of preference.
Kapalua Plantation
Kapalua Bay
Wailea Gold
Wailea Emerald
Kapalua Village

Big Island
Mauna Lani South
Hualalai
Mauna Lani North
(those are the only ones I have played on the BI.)
Have played on Kauai - but except for Princeville, I prefer BI and Maui courses.

Aloha, Bart

From another mid-player women's perspective I can recommend the Bay Course at Kapalua. Pretty location and the holes weren't too long. Green fees are pretty high $220 unless you are a resort guest - look for package deals advertised in golf magazines.
I also enjoyed Pukalani Country Club in Upcountry Maui. Pukalani is Maui's best kept secret - the course is about 1000 feet up Haleakala so the temperature is cooler and the fees are really reasonable ($55).
The Kaanapali courses are not in very good shape.
I found the Prince Course on Kauai to be pretty challenging and therefore a long day (I probably lost 10 balls into ravines)- the views are fantastic though.

Been to Mani Lani and enjoyed that. But now I'm thinking of going back with kids and staying on Oahu and Kauai. Any advice on good, solid non-resort courses with more reasonable green fees? Ones you can walk? Reviews of the big resort courses are pretty easy to come but I need hep for the less well known places. Thanks.

What's the name of the course they play the Hawaiin Open on Oahu? Is that a public fee course? Can you walk?

If you stay in Wailea at a hotel or condo you'll get reduced rates at all three Wailea golf courses.

Just got back from Kauai. Here is an interesting, reasonable and fun way to enjoy an afternoon of family golf. In Kauai there is a golf course called Kukuiolono Golf Course. It was donated by a gentleman in 1919 to the people of Kauai. Greens fees are $7.00 all day and carts are $6.00. For $58.00 we bought three greens fees, a riding cart, a pull cart, rented clubs for three of us, got a bucket of driving range balls, and bought six golf balls. Our family of five had a fun day of golf on a beautiful course, golfing, riding around on a golf cart, taking pictures, and feeding chickens. The pictures are great. It's a real course with great views.

Aloha,
Re Kauai golf courses, I agree with Sheila's take on Kukuilono in Kalaheo.

While it's "manicured" like Princeville or Poipu, it has some of the best scenery on the island.

3 other non-resort courses are Kiahuna in Poipu, Wailua and The Grove, Puakea behind the Kukui Grove Shopping center in Lihue. All three are very nice.

The Grove, my favorite, is a 10 hole course. They had 10 completed before Iniki came through.
Some of the course looks out over the area where the Jurassic Park movies were filmed.

I'm sure a Google search will turn up more info for you.
Mahalo,
Kal
