Golfing at less expensive courses in Maui
 

We're going to stay at the Kapalua Bay Hotel but don't want to spend a lot on golfing. What other courses are nearby and are they comparable to paying the big dollars as Wailea or Kapalua?

Hi Tony,<BR><BR>Golfing is expensive on Maui. If you were going to splurge on one course, I would choose Makena.<BR><BR>There are several municipal courses that are good but not great. I don't recall the name, but there is one near Wailea.

I have a tee time at Pukalani after reading several recommendations about view and value. --thanks!<BR><BR>Now one more tee time to go. Has anyone played SandalWood or should I spend a little more and play Kapalua, Makena or Wailea?

Pukalani is an excellent choice. But you really should consider spending the extra dollars and playing one of the three courses at Kapulua. They are close to the ocean and really beautiful. Pukalani is in a residential area of Maui and you have long distance views of ocean and mountains.

I checked out the courses at Kapalua and found that it is in the windy part of Maui. Our handicaps (my wife and I) are 23 and 25. With such a high slope rating at either of the 3 courses there, plus wind, I'm scared it'll be too hard for us to play and enjoy the views. How do they compare to the Kaanapali courses?

I didn't think the Kaanapali courses were particularly picturesque. Wailea is our favorite, but of the three there, the gold course is really tough (unbelievable number of bunkers). The emerald or blue course are playable and beautiful (even for those of us from Hawaii who are accustomed to the ocean views). One of our favorite places to eat, whether we golf or not, is the restaurant at the Wailea course. The views are breathtaking and the food is great!<BR><BR>Makena was a nice surprise. We played both courses and found them very playable as well.<BR><BR>I am a high-handicaper, but when I travel I want to play the nicest courses that I can.

I'll second the vote for the Wailea courses and for eating at SeaWatch Restaurant at the Gold Clubhouse. It's great for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Well, the time is here. We're leaving today on a flight to Maui. Have 2 tee times booked, at Kapalua Bay Course and at Pukalani Golf Course. I found that if you go to Hilo Hattie and purchase something for $20, you can get a coupon good for 2-for-1 at Sandalwood. The regular green fees there is $80 per person so a 2-for-1 would be great. The only thing is, is that you have to call and book a tee time. They will fax you on a confirmed time. Don't know about walk ons. I checked Stand-By-Golf here and they have closed for the season - don't know if it's the same company as the one that runs in Arizona.
