Golf for the guys/antiquing for the girls. Any suggestions?

We're having trouble deciding where to vacation with another couple for a week this July. The guys will be playing golf most of the time and don't care where we go--as long as there are courses nearby. We women would prefer a scenic place that has plenty of antique stores or antique malls, while also offering some things to do outdoors, like horseback riding, hang gliding or whitewater rafting. If outdoor pursuits aren't available, then a place steeped in history would also work. We just don't think we can antique for 5 days in a row. One couple lives in New York City, the other in New Orleans. So we'd prefer to go someplace we normally wouldn't on a weekend drive. U.S. destination preferred, overseas considered. Any suggestions?
Thanks so much.

Check out Myrtle Beach,S.C. I think you'll find that its made to order for what you're looking for and its centrally located for your group. There are lots of antique shops, water sports, shows and over 100 golf courses.

I immediately thought of New England. There's a Robert Trent Jones course associated with the Woodstock Inn in Woodstock, VT. There are probably also some nice courses in and around Newport, RI, or Cape Cod. Each destination would offer some nice antiquing and outdoor activities for the rest of your group.

Portland, Oregon. Lots of great golf and lots of antique shops, hiking, rafting, etc. hawaii, of course, would also fit the bill.

Lake Tahoe. Beautiful in the summer and plenty to do outdoors, including horseback riding and watersports. Casinos at night. Shopping/antiquing in Tahoe, Reno, Truckee and other little spots.
As far as golf goes, between Tahoe, Reno and Carson City, you can choose from a bevy of great golf courses. And if you're vacationing the week of the 15th, the Celebrity Golf Challenge is at Edgewood.

You might want to consider the Homestead in Virginia or the Greenbrier in West Virginia. Both have tremendous golf facilities and plenty of activities for non-golfers.
Another possibility is the Samoset Resort in Rockport, Maine. It is supposed to have an excellent golf course right on the Maine coast, and its in the middle of prime New England antiquing territory (Rockport/Camden/Lincolnville/Belfast). Finally, you could check out some of the ski resorts in Colorado which have excellent golf courses (e.g., Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone, Telluride). You might have to do some driving, but there are antique stores in many of the old mining towns.

Thanks for the suggestions. All are possibilities. And Oregon sounds wonderful. I don't know why, but I didn't think it would have antique shops.
Thanks again!

North Carolina should fit the bill! Tons of golfing all over the state. Antiquing is good, especially in Wilson North Carolina (45 minutes east of Raleigh). North Carolina is fairly easy to cover. I made day trips from Raleigh to High Point to buy furniture it was one and half hour drive (85 miles). The antiquing is ok over there but the best antiques that I found were in Wilson NC at Boones Antiques. This place has EVERYTHING. They had several warehouses full of furniture from the 17th Century up..Also there was what they call a barn where their "undesirables" go. I liked it there because you could pick up a bargain on a chest of drawers or something. You would have to do some restoration but it is really worth it.
Sorry to rumble on and on. If you do not go to NC this trip go with your friend some other time.

PS You could mosey over to the Outer Banks and go to Ocracoke, very neat and charming fishing village. Have fun.

My suggestion would be Kohler, WI. The golfing is outstanding and the women will not run out of places to see and things to do.

If cost is not an issue stay at the American Club in Kohler, their golf courses are world famous. Sheboygan County and the surrounding area have many fine inexpensive courses.
Contact the Wisconsin Tourism Department, the American Club and Sheboygan County for tour information.
Wisconsin is a beautiful state, its the state everyone in Illinois spends their week-ends and holidays. I know 'cause their license plates out-number WI plates on those days.
If you have any question please send an e-mail and I will try to help you.

Based on the recommendation of another poster, I checked out the Sellwood area of Portland and was very pleased with the antique shopping.

I've always thought California has pretty good antiquing. But it really depends on what "type" of antiques you're into. If you like Shabby Chic, then Cali is THE best place! Have fun wherever you go!

Shenandoah Valley/DC-Virginia suburbs/West Virginia area. Plenty of towns to hit for antiquing in western VA, and plenty of good golf courses.
