My husband and I will be vacationing in the Carolinas for a few weeks this summer. We are not golfers but would like to try it just to see what all the hoopla is about. Many of our friends and coworkers are golfers. My question is, will the serious golfers be annoyed by our amateurism? Will we be able to figure out what we are doing with no help? Is there usually someone available to get you going if you need help? Just wondering what to expect.

Usually in the summer the serious golfers have vacated. When we used to play in Myrtle Beach they always paired us up with another couple and we always had a great time. Most of the people were there to have fun just as we were. One time they paired us with a scratch golfer and he was just as nice as can be while I swept along the fairway.<BR><BR>Myrtle is one fantastic place to play golf. The courses are gorgeous.

Even the best golfers in the world need help figuring out what they're doing. Do everyone (yourselves included) a favor and don't do this until you've had lessons and/or spent a good deal of time at a driving range. Neither you nor the ones following behind you on the course will enjoy it.<BR><BR>

If you have never played golf why not consider a golf school/vacation? You will be in a class w/ other beginners & will start to learn the basics: Posture, Stance, Grip, Alignment. You will aslo learn 'golf etiquette' so that you will know how to behave on the course. If you do not learn the fundamentals of the golf you will not enjoy it. In addition, the players behind you will not enjoy their game!! Golf is not a game where you can simply pick up a club, swing it and..."Hey, I'm playing golf!" The golf swing is by its very nature an 'unatural' motion. It has to be learned. Just for fun: Try keeping your left arm 'straight' & your right arm 'relaxed'. (if you are right- handed, opposite if you are left- handed) Now, hold a club & repeat that as you take the club back. Are we having fun?? To answer your question: "Will we be able to figure out what we are doing with no help?" No. Sign up for lessons. Then go out & play! And, as suggested above spend some time on a driving range.

Golf school for them and a course in reading comprehension for me. I misread the post when I encouraged them to golf in MB. I thought they were hackers, not total novices...sorry about that.

nicki, how would you like to play bridge with someone who has never played before? Don't burden someone else with "trying" to play golf. Spend some time at the range and then have friends take you out the first time.
