Golden Nugget Las Vegas Construction
 

Staying at the Golden Nugget (Vegas) next Wednesday (we have stayed there in the past)and we are wondering if the pool, sports book and North check in is completed.
Overall, if you have just been there what do you think? Thanks, Poppa96

We just stayed for the first time at the Golden Nugget about 5 weeks ago and for the price of under $50 a night, it was a great deal and the construction wasn't a problem but they do have it routed differently and the sports book I believe is in the noodle restaurant during the day..didn't do the pool..
we stayed at the farthest tower and it was completly remodeled..don't know if it was the North tower but for the price even if there is construction going on it was right on the money!

Why don't you call them?

The idea of calling only does so much good. I have little doubt that whatever is happening there -- even if the roof was off and half the walls were down, you would be told "there is some minor construction going on, but nothing that will bother you".

So the pool was completed 5 weekes ago? That's cool, as I thought there prices would go up when the pool was done. Next June, they are up to $90.- on the weekdays and $130.- on Fri. & Sat..

My experience is that a hotel doesn't want the added headache of having lied to a customer. When I've asked, I've gotten a straight story.

I didn't do the pool.. don't know if it is open or gone until construction is over..as far the room rate if memory serves me was $49 and a $75 food/beverage credit..talk about a deal! This was off Expedia no less..
I really liked the GN..downtown is a totally different animal..we usually stay at the Wynn..especially when you are on their e-mail list for great deals..the only way it makes since to me! Get on their list..rooms are $119

Braunsky, I have never heard of anyone calling a hotel and being told that yes there is a lot of construction and it will be a terrible inconvenience to stay there. Yet dozens of posts tell me that such things are common. If the hotels you called were all honest, I think you have been very lucky.

I didn't mean to open a can of worms. I'll post when we return as to how far along they are in the remodeling. I booked for $119.00 a night. Then got an email offer dropping it to $99.00, plus a free buffet. Then 3 days later checked again I got it for $79.00 minus the buffet which was fine. So keep checking. Poppa96

Poppa96 - good luck & have a great time. I'll be interested to read your report. As for calling hotels about construction, I haven't been lucky, just persistent and careful. You don't ask open-ended evaluative questions, like "how bad is it?" or "how much noise will there be?" You ask specifically what construction is going on and what stage it's at(a new floor? hoisting girders past your window? gutting an existing floor right above you? installing flooring or carpeting right above you?), where the construction is happening, when it starts and when it stops each day, what facilities are not open, what rooms are farthest from the construction, ... you get the idea.

So let me get this straight. You actually call a hotel and you get someone who can tell you which floor they will be installing carpet on during the day two weeks from now? Or what time the painters will be starting in the room next to you (even when you have no idea what floor you will be staying on)?

Look, if you don't believe you can get useful information from a hotel undergoing construction, or you don't understand my suggestions, or you don't believe my suggestions, don't call. FYI, knowing that a hotel is renovating alternating floors so that construction affects all rooms equally or that the upper floors with the best view are being renovated, or that a new tower is going up on the north side affecting 1/2 of all rooms might be useful information, but hey, that's just me.

Good suggestions Braunsky, notwithstanding Patrick's smart-a remarks. At the very least, you will be in a better position for some compensation if you asked about the contruction and were misled.

smart-a remarks? You've got to be kidding. I still say if you get serious answers like Braunsky's talking about, you're far luckier than I. I really have no idea how you manage to get someone to answer the phone who would actually know or be able to find the answers to the questions you have indicated. I have called, most recently to the Aladdin before our stay there this past July after reading that the conversion to the Planet Hollywood Resort was still continuing, and I could not get one piece of information out of them regarding our stay. No one could tell me if the casino would be affected (half of it was gone when we got there -- being moved), no one could tell us what was being done to the rooms or the exterior. All they would tell us was "nothing will seriously affect your stay here", "the work will nearly all be done before you arrive", and "no MAJOR construction will be going on". I guess they don't call blocking off half the hotel including about half of the public areas as being anything major. Regarding getting compensation, I did get a smart alecky remark when I was checking out and made a comment about all the construction and the lack of half the casino --"well, at $69 a night, surely you're not complaining."

I'm sorry that giving my honest personal experiences are regarded as being "smart-a" remarks. Personally I think only a true "smart-a" would think that or bother to post to say it. But thanks for your valuable input, tom42, or whoever you are.

Okay back from the Golden Nugget and alittle late with this report. At the time I left, the 24th, the pool was 3 weeks from being finished. They must have 30 to 40 people working on it daily so they may make it by the middle of November. The Sports Book was stuck in Noodles which is across from the old Gift Shop, which has been reduced to a fifth of its size. Alot going on but didn't interfer with gambling, eating or sleeping...still the best place to stay Downtown.

Thanks for the updates Poppa. Assuming the pool is all outdoors, I'm surprised they are rushing it, since won't pool season be almost over by opening is approx mid November?

Hope you won Poppa..sounds like you had a great time like we did and you can't beat the price and the downtown location!

So now you've raised my curiosity. Did you call the hotel in advance and ask about construction? Were their answers appropriate to what was actually going on?

Trippin the pool from what I could tell is not covered but is inside of the buidling i.e. super dome. I wish I had paid better attention because there was something coming up through the middle which was either for sun bathing or a restaurant. I'll be back in April and hopefully it will be finished.
