Going to see King Tut! Anyone ever hear of the "St Michel" Hotel...?

Hi-
We're a pair of New Yorkers coming to see the King Tut exhibit- never been to Florida. We prefer smaller, elegant, "boutique hotels"- having trouble finding any other than the crazy highrise monsters. Anyone been to St Michel? or The Wave? Any other recommendations?? Thanks so much!

If you are referring to the St. Michel in Coral Gables, I have heard that the rooms are dark and dingy. Don't know first-hand though. It is well located in the Gables, and I hear that their restaurant is top-notch, although in Coral Gables there are soooo many restaurants to choose from.

Do you want to stay in Coral Gables or would you consider South Beach? There seem to be a lot of smaller boutique-type hotels in South Beach that have received decent reviews such as the Blue Moon and the Winterhaven.

Wow. Thank you so much for responding- can this be the same place? Described on Expedia: "All 27 individually decorated guestrooms feature antique furnishings, wood floors, complimentary fruit baskets, memory foam bedding, and complimentary wireless Internet access..." We were planning on staying in Ft Lauderdale for just the one night then heading over to Miami, but, as you can see, we're pretty clueless as to where to go. I'd be so grateful for any advice you could send my way...

My first piece of advice would be to do a search of hotels (or any that you would be interested in staying at) on www.tripadvisor.com. They post reviews, etc. which probably are not 100% reliable but at least it is something.

If you want old and elegant in Coral Gables, maybe you should look into the Biltmore. It certainly is not small, but it is old and charming and they have a great pool apparently.

Otherwise, I would suggest checking out some of the smaller properties in South Beach, as I mentioned previously.

Where in Miami is the King Tut exhibit?

Oh and yes...the place described on Expedia and the hotel I am thinking about are one and the same.

Sorry, another message from moi....

I just remembered the name of the small hotel in South Beach that is supposed to be pretty nice, and only 17 rooms, I think.

Called the Hotel Impala on Collins Avenue. Also has an Italian restaurant that is supposed to be good. Check it out.

sorry- The Tut exhibit is actually not in Miami...it's in Ft Lauderdale, which is why we're straddling the two areas. There are still tickets if you're interested!

St Michel is dark and dingy, I stayed there once. Stay at the Biltmore or in S.B.

For moderate South Beach hotels I like:

The South Seas
Marseilles
Doubletree Surfcomber
Cardoza

The first three are oceanfront with oceanfront pools in the Lincoln Road Mall area on Collins Avenue.

Not sure if the Cardoza has a pool but the Ocean Drive location is excellent.
