Going to San Diego in Sept, what to do???
 

I am going to San Diego in the end of September and i just wanted to know what fun things there are to do there. Also we want to plan a trip to Mexico for the day does anyone have any tips???

I know it's so close and is tempting, but I'd skip Tijuana. There's plenty of Mexico in SanDiego already. Use the extra time to go to the beach. Leave a full day for the zoo.. it's the best I've eve been to. Balboa park is nice. Go out to the Hotel Coronado.

If you like lobster, I'd recommend a trip to Puerto Nuevo in Mexico for a late lunch down there along the coast. You might also want to think about a night down in Rosarito Beach if you have your heart set on seeing Mexico. But I wouldn't waste your time on TJ.

I think the best places to spend time are just north of San Diego. I especially like Del Mar, the beach there is beautiful and you can eat in some great restaurants. The best restaurant, oddly enough is a pizza place (Del Mar Pizza), that is run by a transplanted New Yorker that went to Del Mar to retir e after 30 years in the business and couldn't stay away. Other restaurants I would recommend are at the top of a high -end shopping center and overlook the ocean. Especially nice in the early evening. <BR>Of course the Zoo in San Diego is considered by many to be the best in the world and I would agree. I would also include Marine World which is a lot of fun, they have a wonderful shark exhibit and fun shows. The downtown area has been completly rehabilitated over the last ten years and has a cute trolly you can ride on and some decent night life. And if I was going to go to Mexico I would take the all day cruise (make reservations now) that goes to Ensenada and back (6:30 am to 6:30 pm). You stop in Ensenade for a few hours which is just long enough to get a taste and then you are back on the ship (no border hassles) and strait back to San Diego. I love gambling and they have a little casino on board in intl. waters. Have fun.

Despite the strong and virulent anti-Mexico sentiment on Fodors, I'd agree with OcGal that a trip south to Rosarito Beach is worth it. Really cool place. <BR>The polar opposite would be to head just north of San Diego to La Jolla - a great little, upscale town overlooking the ocean. Some great restaurants and shopping there. Plus, some super people-watching.

Captain Kirk: Just an FYI - La Jolla is a great little, upscale, northern suburb of San Diego.

Shine Mexico! Once you are in SanDiego you will not want to waste time anywhere else except to La Jolla or Del Mar. Del Mar has a great thoroughbred race track. Go to Old Town if you need to have a Mexican rush.

Gee, thanks, Barbara, I didn't know that even though I have family who lives in La Jolla. Do you have anything of SUBSTANCE to add to this post? <BR>[By the way -- try telling most people in La Jolla that their "town" is nothing more than a suburb of San Diego.]
