Going to NY with 9 year olds
Hi, We are going to be in Manhattan in late June with our 2 nine year old girls (for their birthdays at American Girl). We want to see a play and are thinking of Grease or Mary Poppins. We are doing some research and seeing that Grease is not getting very good reviews with other sites. Can anyone give us any thoughts regarding these plays? We just want the girls to enjoy themselves.
Thanks! |
We very much enjoyed the current production of "Grease". The show was terrific, the book/score/choreography fantastic. Keep in mind that many professional reviewers wish more to be "clever" and "witty" than informative...
But, do check for discounted tickets on Playbill.com, Theatermania.com, Broadwaybox.com and others. |
I think 9 year olds would love Grease. The reviewers write priamrily for theater buffs - and don;t tend to favor shows that are vary light and fluffy - which most 9 year olds would like.

I've heard that young girls are loving Legally Blonde.
I might also consider Wicked. Looks like fun. |
What about The Little Mermaid? I'm not the biggest Disney fan, but they do know how to put on show for all ages.
|
My guess is that your girls would love Grease or Little Mermaid. My 10-yr-old daughter loved Wicked last summer, so you might consider that one too. One suggestion - get the soundtrack ahead of time (for any of these) and listen to it in the car or wherever. Your girls will then enjoy it that much more when the music is familiar.

Will Hairspray still be there? I would think 9 year old girls would LOVE that. EVERYONE seems to love Wicked. Legally Blonde is really fun - they might be a little young, but there's nothing inapporopriate (less so than Grease even).

Or Lion King, which is amazing on stage. I second (third, fourth...whatever) the suggestion of Wicked.
