Going to North Conway NH in 3 weeks to get engaged? Need help finding romantic spot.

Hi, I'm going to North Conway NH the weekend of November 15 and 16 with my girlfriend of 2 years. I'm thinking of proposing to her that weekend but I'm not familiar with the area. I'd like to do something romantic that she'd like, but I need ideas. I've been searching websites for a week but I couldn't find anything, and my friend suggested Fodors.com. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks!!

Take a look at the website for this B&B. We stayed there, and it was absolutely charming, lots to do right on the site and very intelligent and solicitous owners. You coual deven ask them for suggestions, they know the area inside and out, the owner's family has operated the farm for generations, IIRC.

Where are you coming from ? I can't imagine telling people in 30 years time that you went to North Conway to get engaged. There are so many other more romantic locations.

Rusy, just a few hundred yards off the outlet-filled highway, the North Conway area is absolutely charming. Some of the most scenic areas in NH, outdoors interests from rock-climbing to fields full of lupines in the spring. The B&B I mentioned above is on aroad that nearly parallels the outlet highway (sorry I can't remember road names or numbers at the moment) but it's like another world.

Well I'm coming from Boston. I know theres a lot more here, but I just thought it would be fun to find a nice place up there. I already have a place to stay. This trip has been planned for the last 2 months and it just so happens that I just bought the ring. Trust me, if there's not something spectacular to do there, as far as a great place to get engaged, I'll do it here in Boston instead. I'm just seeing whats out there.

You might go to the Yankee magazine website where there is lots of information. November is not usually the prettiest time of year in North Conway, but then again you could always hit a day or two of Indian Summer, and you could drive aroaund to see many beautiful areas in the White Mountains, the Kancamangus HIghway, have drinks or tea at either the Mt. Washington Hotel or the newly opened Mountain View Grand. The drive through Franconia Notch is still beautiful in spite of the Old Man in the Mountain having fallen down. That said, if you are looking to get out of the big city and are willing to consider a little city, I think I would head to either Portsmouth, NH, or Portland, Maine.

If they are running the Tram at Cannon Mountain in Franconia Notch AND it's a nice day...I would think that that the top of the Mountain would be a great proposal spot. It's maybe an hour from N. Conway. OR, if the auto road to the summit of Mount Washington is open, that would be another option as well.

Suggest you go to the Mount Washington Hotel, north of Pinkham Notch.

http://www.mtwashington.com/

Go out on the veranda with a view of Mt. Washington and the presidentials, if it's clear, you can't get much more romantic.

You could stay at the Mt. Washington, or somewhere in Jackson/Intervale...Eagle Mountain House, or check out this link:

http://www.bbonline.com/nh/jackson.html

Note that you're in shoulder season, after the foliage and before skiing, so it should not be too hard to get a good room at a good price.

Good luck...in all respects!

Love the Mt Washington veranda idea. I think that is my favorite place on the face of the earth.

I was going to suggest someplace overlooking Lake Winnepeausauke, (the lake used in On Golden Pond), it is really beautiuful, how about near the Weirs, there are some nice restaurants in that area as well.

That part of NH is beautiful so it should not be difficult to find just the right place.

Oh and have dinner at Harts Turken Farm in Meredith, not far from where you are going to be, and you might visit the Annalee Doll factory and take home a Christmas decoration or two, to remember your trip.

For some siteseeing, there's Old Man of the Mountain, The Flume, Indian Head, lots of places for Maple candy and a Christmas land, not sure of the name.

Have a great time and congratulations just a bit early.

I must respectfully disagree with some of Wantsumsun's suggestions. On Golden Pond was filmed on Squam Lake, not Winnepesaukee; Weirs Beach is a busy frenetic area, not romantic at all; Hart's Turkey Farm is not romantic, it's more family-style; the Old Man in the Mountain is gone. I think the Mt. Washington veranda is ideal.

The veranda idea is wonderful...

and if you need a place to stay that's not the Mt Washington, there's a great inn right near Mt. Washington called the Dana Place Inn - cozy, fireplaces, walks along the Elk river, good breakfasts (great breakfasts) and rooms with a real NE feel - stayed there with my daughter and a friend of hers and loved it. They have a www site so you can check it out at http://www.danaplace.com/ - they also have a nice and underused indoor pool and hotub.

The most romantic place in the area and one of the most romantic places in all of New England is the Conway Scenic railroad. An old-fashioned train takes you on a ride through the mountains (2 versions-short and long). It is a spectacular view and very, very romantic.

If you check the post on White Mountain Inns, you'll see two strong recommendations (ours included) for the Snowvillage Inn, a short drive from N. Conway, but a completely different atmosphere. Wonderfully romantic (we went there on our honeymoon). Check their web site www.snowvillageinn.com
The inn's restaurant serves great food and I can't think of a more perfect place in that area to get engaged!!

If I wanted an ideal place to propose to my future wife I would go to Stonehurst Manor on Route 16 just north of the North Conway business district. We have "Honeymooned" there 3 or 4 times.
You can get a "Manor" room with or without a fireplace and/or jacuzzi. You can book MAP or EP plans. The meals are excellent and ordered from a large menu. There is a cozy fireplaced lounge in which to mingle with other guests.
Check out their web site, www.stonehurstmanor.com
