Going to Newport this weekend -- what to do -- where to eat?

Last minute trip to Newport --

Any restuarant recommendations?

We have plans to go to the tennis hall of fame.

Which mansions should we visit?

Anything else?

Thanks

Try the Brick Alley Pub. It's excellent!
a visit to "gonewport.com" should help. Have fun!

I'll second the Brick Alley Pub recommendation. If it's open, I'd also highly recommend Scales and Shells for really good seafood.

Re: the mansions... check out the packages ... you can probably do 2 or 3 of them for a decent price. The Elms, Marble House , Mrs Astor's Beechwood ( they used to do the re-enactment, eg. the "maid " opens the door and treats you like a guest of the Astors. They are all interesting... just different.. there is also Rosecliff ( where they filmed the Great Gastsby) and one that is sort of Gothic but I forgot the name.
If you are a Kennedy Buff .. go to Hammersmith Farm and also go to Mass at the Catholic Church ( again, I forgot the name but it is right downtown). The last time I went there was a lovely singer doing the hymns. Brunch at Castle on the Hill...have fun.

For restaurants, I'd recommend Cafe Zelda for lunch; Asterisk & Obelisk on lower Thames (a bit past the main shopping area) for a nice dinner; Black Pearl for burgers and chowder. I used to like Scales & Shells but had two "eh" meals there last summer.

I think the previous poster meant Castle Hill.

Belive Hammersmith Farm is now privately owned and not open to tourists.

Flo's Clam Shack for the best fried clams.

Norman Bird Sanctuary

There is a restaurant next to the Tennis HOF called LaForge. Pretty good lunch spot.

If it's not too cold do Cliff Walk or at least the part from the 40 Steps near Achre Court at Salve Regina College.

Breton Point State Park is great and even in winter you'll find kite flyers.

Have fun.

Flo's for fried food. Castle Hill is closed for renovations.
