Going to New York for 1 night???
Will be there July 3 to July 4.
Driving from DC? is it best to fly? or drive? Looking for a hotel in the 150.00 range. Thinking of White Plains if we drive? Free Parking then a nice train ride into the city??? Or a cheap flight to JFK? Any nice recommendations for lodging and transportation. I am not a knowledgeable NYC traveler. Thanks a Bunch. |
Ahhh...wish this had been posted a few days ago when Independence Air posted their July 4th sale - each leg Dulles to JFK was $29, but the seats are sold out at that fare...
At this rate, your cheapest transportation option would be to drive. It will take about 4hrs to drive, and the last hour can be painfully slow with traffic. You may also want to check Amtrak fares - you can't beat the convenience of the train, though it will surely be more expensive than driving. Check out The Avalon hotel in NYC. I got a room rate of $169 through Yahoo Travel. We stayed there last November - not fancy, but suited us well. They have valet parking - we parked once and didn't pick up the car til we checked out. Location is great - walking distance to Empire State Bldg. We also love to eat at Artisanal which is a mere 1.5 blocks from Avalon and excellent for cheese sampling or one of their wines by the glass (you can order *every* wine that they serve by the glass...very nice). |
Why White Plains? Not the most convenient commute for someone coming from DC (it's north of NYC and you'd have to cross the Hudson). And not the "nicest" of train ride choices.
Try the Travel Inn on West 42nd--I believe thay have parking and are convenient to the Lincoln Tunnel. |
Ellenem is wrong. White Plains is not across the river, and it's not a bad train ride to the city.
However, Tarrytown might be a more convenient choice if you drive, as it is right across the river from the Tappan Zee Bridge. Keep checking for last minute flight bargains. |

White Plains is across the river from DC. If they park in Jersey they won;t have to negotiate one of the Hudson bridges or tunnels. That said - I would Amtrak (I would do almost anything rather than drive on a holiday wekend) - if you can still gert a hotel in NYC at this point,. |

We are on different channels but we're watching the same show. White Plains IS across the Hudson from DC. Certainly the train ride from White Plains is convenient, but "nice"? I think the Tarrytown ride down the Hudson would be five times nicer, though it would still mean having to cross the river at some point on a holiday weekend, so I didn't suggest it. For such a quick trip, I agree with nytraveler--stay in Manhattan. Don't waste time on an additional commute. |
