Going to Key West Memorial Day Weekend
 

2 Couples - late 20's - going to Key West over Memorial Day. Would like recommendations on where to stay. Would like to be near a sandy beach (I understand some of Key West waterfront doesn't have a sandy beach). We're not going to have a car, so would need to be within walking distance, if possible of nightlife. Anyone know anything about the Sheraton Suites or Best Western Resort? Also interested in knowing about B&Bs or inns - is that a better way to go? We're on a pretty tight budget, so would like to stay someplace inexpensive, but clean and nice. This is our vacation for the year, so don't want to be disappointed. Thanks.

Best beaches are on the Atlantic side, but that is on the other side of the island (2miles) from the mainstream of stores/nightlife in Key West. All of the beaches are man made anyway--not enough wave action to make a good one. You might consider a condo-you would have a kitchen to fix some meals, hold snacks, etc. The Galleon, & Banyan are close to downtown. <BR>Key West is - in my opinion - one of the most wonderful vacation spots in America. But if it's beaches you're looking for, you'll be terribly disappointed. As the previous poster mentioned, the only beach to speak of is on the Atlantic side, but all the attractions are on the Gulf side. Even though it's only a couple of miles, the walk could get pretty old. If you're willing to forego the beach for location, I'd advise you to look into the Galleon Resort and Marina (they have a web site). They're a timeshare/nightly rental in the thick of activity with reasonable prices.

Does anyone know anything about the Island City House Hotel in Key West?

Katie, <BR> <BR>Me and my wife spent 5 days at the Marriott Reach resort. It has i believe the only natural beach on the island. We had a wonderful time, and would definitely recommend it. It is located at the south end of Duval street. It is about exactly one mile from one end of Duval street to the other. It is a good walk to main bar/restaurant scene but it is easily managed. Rent a scooter to get around It is the best way to get around and see the whole island and is relatively cheap (approx $30 day). There are also pedicabs running the length of Duval street. Enjoy the whole Key West atmosphere as it is very unique to first timers. Relax and go with the flow and you will have a wonderful time. If you can find it have the whole grilled Florida lobster, there is a place on Duval that grills them right outside but cannot remember the name, best lobster you will ever have.

You will love Key West - my husband and I were there for our first visit in October and can't wait to go back. We stayed at the Washington Street Inn - which was terrific, and very reasonable. You are located on the south end of Duval Street not far from the Marriott. It is small and quiet with a lovely pool and greenery all around. We had a rental car but didn't take it out at all. Everywhere we went we walked. It was wonderful. Enjoy

Recommendations: Try a sunset cruise on a Caterman or the Pirate Ship. Also try a meal at the Turtle Kraals Restaurant - best seafood I've ever had and I live in Fl. Another place we enjoy eating at is El Siboney's Cuban Restaurant. It is where the Cuban population eats. We have stayed at the Travelers Palm which is more like a B&B than a hotel. It has a pool a hot tub and a very private setting.
