Going Gluten-Free in Boston/Cambridge?
 

Our family is spending an ultra-long and special weekend celebrating in Boston and Cambridge.

We have several folks that live with Celiac Disease in our entourage.

We are seeking restaurants that are known as GF-friendly, as well as retail sources of food, esp. baked goods in both Boston and Cambridge.

Every supermarket I've been in recently has a good-sized gluten-free section. Where will you be staying?

If you google "gluten free dining Boston" you'll get a lot of lists. Some more up-to-date than others. But I don't think you'll have a problem with this, since gluten-free diets are so common these days.

Oleana in Cambridge is pretty GF-friendly. Elephant Walk (has multiple locations) has an entire GF menu.

Both Trader Joe's and Whole Foods have large GF selections.

If you will be in Boston/Cambridge the dates of October 5,6,7 you should drop in to the GTG. It is a lot of fun.

Any restaurant worth its salt will be able to accomadate celiac. Lot's of restaurants have a seperate gluten free menu. When making reservations I would be clear that there will be a number of celiacs in your party to give the kitchen a heads up. Most better Italian joints now offer a variety of gluten free pasta and pizza.

Legal Sea Foods has a nice separate GF menu that it gives to guests who request it. When there twice, once w/a friend and once w/my brother, both of whom have celiac, it was really nice for them to be able to confidently order directly off a menu w/o having to ask questions of the server.

If you're looking for a particularly good place for a beer or two, the Five Horses Tavern in Davis Square (Somerville, on the T's Red Line) offers several gluten-free beers in addition to their great selection of on-tap and bottled stuff.

Sometimes Living Without Magazine does travel stories of places friendly to people with allergies or gluten intolerance. Your library may have past issues.

What others say about restaurants having extensive GF offerings is true in our town, even in small BBQ style restaurants. The word is definitely "out". You shouldn't have a problem. Select your places and call them for info to be sure.

I just came across this app to find gluten-free restaurants, bakeries etc. It's free, it has Boston on it's sample page, so if you have a smart phone it may be worth taking a look at it.

Thanks to all of you who have been so helpful...with your information in hand, we will have a great time in beautiful Boston...especially pleased about Legal Sea Foods recco...my husband remembers it very fondly from a trip many, many years ago.

If your husband remembers Legals fondly, I would make reservations at their latest Harborside location in the Seaport District.
