Gloucester-Worth Visiting?

Have finished reading The Perfect Storm. Is Gloucester worth visiting? Day trip only?

We went with another couple two summers ago. The husband was a big fan of the book. It was worth a day trip. The scenery is quite nice as is the statute of men who go down to ships. (I think that's the name.) There are some nice houses to visit and the drive in the immediate area is nice. Not glamorous or big, but a nice day trip for adults in particular. I think you can whale-watch from there as well.
