Glenwood NM or Reserve NM?
We are going to be passing through this area of New Mexico in a couple of weeks. I realize both are small towns, but would one be better than the other as a base to explore the area?

Sorry, I've never been to either one. That's one area of the state we haven't explored yet.

Me either, Lee Ann. We've been to New Mexico dozens of times but have never ventured this far west. I'll be sure to report back!

Glenwood is the nicer place. Reserve is the county seat and is a beat sleazy and dirty. Several good motels in Reserve (try to get into Crabapple Cabins, otherwise Whitewater Motel next to post office. Glenwood is hub for hiking in Gila Wilderness and is close to ghost town Mogollon. Places to eat in Glenwood are limited. Alma Cafe up the road north a bit is good and Marios has great pizza but open only few days. Blue Front in Glenwood is bar and grill with simple fare and cowboy clientelle. And of course Glenwood has Catwalk trail. but it's closed right now for work on bridge for couple weeks. You can check Gila Nat Forest Web site for details when it will reopen
You can still walk trail but have to go long way and harder hike. Enjoy the trip. It's beautiful country. |
error -- those motels I mentioned are in GLENWOOD not reserve.

thank you chookman! I can't believe the catwalk is closed but repairs have to be done sometime. Do you live in the area?
|
I live part time in Glenwood .. I'm not there right now. Been going to the gila since 1970s. My place is just off Catwalk Road next to state Fish Hatchery.
