"glamping" or luxury camping in Texas
 

Hello All,

I am new to Texas and wanted to give my husband a unique getaway as a gift. We have done "primitive" camping as well as stayed in cabins in the woods, but I would like to do something different this time. I've been reading about glamping (or camping with glamour, haha) and would love to find something within a three hour drive of Dallas. Staying in a yurt sounds like a really neat idea too.

Any recommendations on fancy tent-camping or yurt-ing in Texas? I would love to be able to cook our own food, but not be too far from civilization. I have also heard of business that one can pay to set up your campsite for you -- we don't currently have any camping equipment and don't want to invest a bunch of money in it at this time. Any recommendations on that service would be appreciated too. Thanks!

The only state park in Texas that is listed as having yurts available is Abilene state park. Here is the Texas State Parks website listing of available "Lodging and Other Indoor Overnight Facilities". There are several parks listed as having "limited use cabins" and also several with screened shelters. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/p.../lodging/#yurt

About four hours from Dallas in Arkansas is DeGray Lake State Park. They have yurts. It's a lovely state park with many things to do there. http://www.degray.com/accommodations/camping_yurts.aspx

Have you looked at camping at Fossil Rim outside Glenrose? It's a wildife park that has safari style tent camping with lots of amenities. Another option is Rough Creek Lodge. You can check them both out online. They seem to me to fit your needs and are certainly close enough to Dallas. Both would be great getaway gifts!

Marfa is about 6 hours away from Dallas, probably more.

Fossil Rim is a beautiful place. If you can reserve one of the campsites close to the bluff, awesome. :)

We stayed at Sinya and did not like accomodations or operator.
