Glacier NP- which is closer to the entrance

Which town is closer to the entrance to Glacier NP...Kalispell or Whitefish? We will be driving from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Thinking we will get accomodations outside the park. Any thoughtss?

Thanks,
Jean

Hello from Northwest Montana.
Whitefish and Kalispell are approx. the same distance, that being around 35 miles.
Accomodations IN the park are few and far between if you are able to get a room at all at this late date. Both Kalispell and Whitefish have a number of hotels, motels and B&B.
Weather this week is forecast as HOT, high 90s during day and mid 40s in the evening and of course VERY low humidity.

Thanks, John. We are considering staying at the Moosehead Lodge, but understand it is about 40 minutes from the entrance. Interested in doing that drive on The Road to the Sun. Doable in a day?

Thanks,
Jean

Jean, we drove the going to the sun road 3 years ago. I think it took a morning. We started pretty early and were glad because there were very few vehicles on the road when we started and lots more by the end.

Going to the sun road is indeed doable in a day. In fact you will have time for a short hike or two if you plan all day on the Sun. Traffic is slow as this is THE season and consruction on parts of the road is ongoing. You will probably have a 10 to 15 minute wait in 3 different areas due to road maintenance but the view while you are waiting is fantastic.
Never heard of the Moosehead Lodge. Is it new? Where is it located?
Have a great trip.

We were in GNP in late June and stayed at the Many Glacier Lodge which has the best park location, I think. We drove the GTTSR on a rainy day so didn't stop as often as normal. We stayed at the Kalispell Grand Hotel and highly recommend it.

Hi Pumpkin,
We were at Glacier Park last September. We stayed at The Rocky Mountain Inn in Whitefish. It was nice and it was an easy drive to the entrance to Glacier and we did the Sun Road in a matter of hours one day. It is a beautiful drive. Enjoy the park.
