Glacier National Park Questions
Thinking about a trip this summer but didn't realize you have to reserve the GTTS road ahead of time. Is there any other way to go at a certain time? If we stay in the park in the lodge, would we be able to go on the road?
What are scenic hikes with a lake or waterfalls that are short easy (not more than 30-45) minutes and non strenuous? How many days do you need in the park? Are there other attractions nearby? Any other tips for first timers? Thanks |
Sign on to Recreation.gov to get a "ticket" (reservation" that is valid for 3 days including the day of entry. The season for timed entry reservations is until September 11 2022. In past years there have been too many vehicles in the park on good weather days leading to full parking lot at the top of Logan Pass. Entry without a ticket from the St. Mary (east side) will be allowed until the snow is all plowed (mid June).

If by staying in the park in the lodge you mean the Many Glacier Hotel or Swiftcurrent Motor Inn there is a great hike that leaves from the Motor Inn parking lot. It is level/easy (at least the first mile or so) and passes by Fishercap Lake (might see moose), Redrock Lake, then Redrock Falls. Nice views most of the way. If you are able to get reservations to stay in the park, that may allow you entry as well. It doesn't hurt to check.

If you enter the park before 6 a.m. you don't need a ticket. You'll also be more likely to find a parking spot when you arrive at the Logan Pass lot.

Not sure how operations/ticketing works in COVID times: there is a boat that can take you across the lake at Two Medicine Lakes. This is completely spectacular. It leaves you off at a number of hiking trails. You can decide to walk back along the lake or take a return trip on the boat. Highly recommended, and my favorite experience in the park.
My favorite experience in Western Montana is renting a motorboat at Big Arm to boat out to Wild Horse Island State Park. You'd have to figure out where to tie up your boat. The island has bighorn sheep, deer, horses, and other wildlife. How much you hike is up to you. |
