Glacier National Park, Kallispell, Flathead Lake
So we are doing a roadtrip, camping. We want to indulge ALL that nature has for us.
Suggestions for the following would be very helpfull: 1. Where should we sleep in Glacier, where should we buy supplies before we enter glacier, which activities are a MUST. 2. If you have to choose between Flathead Lake, Whitefish and Kallispell, where should we camp? 3. Can we rent Kayaks? How much are the costs? 4. What is not to be missed in this area? 5. Any good places to eat at good prices? |
Where will you be starting from? Advice for someone flying into Spokane, WA is quite different than for someone flying into Billings, MT. Maybe you will be driving from where you live, but I don't know that either.

We always camp inside the Park on the west side and buy our supplies in Kalispell. The camp store inside the park is rather limited in what they offer and expensive. We have never camped there but on the east side Two Medicine has a lovely CG. The next time out that way we will try to stay there.

If you have time, camp at both the east and west sides of Glacier. You can reserve campsites only at two camps, St. mary on the east and Fish Creek on the west. Some of the others (like many glacier) are very popular and you must arrive early (before noon) to claim a spot.
You can view the locations of the campgrtounds and read about each one on the park website: http://home.nps.gov/applications/gla...s/cgstatus.cfm INformation on kayak rentals is on this page: http://www.glacierparkboats.com/rentboat.htm It looks like you can rent sea kayaks at Many Glacier (Swiftcurrent Lake) and Apgar (Lake McDonald). $14 an hour at either location. Watch out for afternoon winds on these lakes. |
I would choose to camp in near Flathead Lake rather than Kalispell or Whitefish - if you can find a campground near BigFork that is the best - it is a fun little town with a great small main street and lots of good places to eat. The lake is beautiful!
