Glacier National Park in May

Would it be crazy to go to Glacier National Park in May? Would we be able to hike, or would the weather preclude this? Thanks for any advice.

The Going to the Sun road doesn't usually open until late June and a lot of the trails have ice on them too.

The official web page has a place that gives trail and road conditions.

You would be missing so much if you go before the road opens.

Live from Northwest Montana---May is a bit early though it has been a mild winter so far. Snow depths at the top of Logan pass in the winter usually are 80 feet or more, therefore late June or early July is ideal.
For up to date info.

We did Glacier Park in the third week of June 2000. We were disappointed at the amount of snow and the cool weather. I remember thinking I would wait until July if I did it again. The Going to the Sun road had just opened. While it was fun to drive through the snow banks, it wasn't the waterfalls and wildflowers we had expected. In any case, the park is absolutely stunning.

The snow pack varies greatly from year to year. Last spring, the snow came late and heavy. When we were there in July, the Highline Trail was still closed and the Sun Road has not been open long.

There is a web site that keeps travelers up to date on plowing through the snow banks and on the snow depth. It is such an iffy thing that you need to be flexible in your plans. If snow fall is light, then the road might well open 3 to 4 weeks before it did last year.

With such variable conditions it is of course impossible to give a definite answer.

Thanks, everyone. Looks like May is out! We'll go when conditions are more pleasant.
