Glacier National Park

August 2017 we plan on visiting GNP. We always make our way to Jenny Lake Lodge in the Tetons. This past month we Started in Moab and worked our way up. The year prior we began in SD to Yellowstone and down into the Tetons so as you can see we don't mind the driving.
My question is this...... Does anyone know if we stay in a centrally located area of the park would we be able to explore all the highlighted must-sees? We do like to hike but not lengthy hikes. 4 mile rt hikes are about it. 5 mile may be OK. When we stayed in Yellowstone we stayed at the Lodge and it was central to everything. Kind of what we are looking for now. Or does it not matter? I have also found some nice area near the west entrance that look nice. Just need to be able to get to the east without long drives.
Along that thought.....someone here suggested this past trip we break it up with a night in Vernal and we were very happy we took that advice as we were going to drive into Jackson Hole and waste a night there. Great suggestion!
I am looking for a similar suggestion this time too. Is there an area between GNP and GTNP that we could stop for the night and see some sights?
If not, I would do a night north of Yellowstone and drive to GTNP the day. Who gets tired of seeing Yellowstone, right?
Thank you in advance!
Ellen

I would stay at the Lake McDonald Lodge not too far from the west entrance. There is also a motel in Apgar, but it did not look nearly as nice as Lake McDonald Lodge. However, the restaurant in Apgar, Eddie's, is very good.
Outside the park, closer to the west entrance is the Isaak Walton Inn. We toured the grounds and the cozy common areas recently - very nice staff and a 1939 inn that housed the railroad workers, who build the Northern Railroad. Some of the railroad cars are now private rooms with kitchens.

There are hiking trails throughout the park, but we did not hike. 4 of us had bad colds, and frankly, we were afraid of confronting bears, as they are coming down the mountains to eat heartily before hibernating. We took the red jammer for a Going to the Sun tour to Logan Pass. Many trails from their huge parking lot and interpretive center.

Our drive took us from West Yellowstone through Ennis, beautiful drive during the fall, to Butte. Then Missoula outskirts to Flathead Lake, staying 4 nights in the town of Whitefish on the lake. Missoula seemed better than Butte, but Whitefish was our favorite as we had a lovely condo overlooking the lake with a sunset view.

We never got to the eastern entrance nor beyond Logan Pass. Next trip for sure!

Are you confusing Glacier National Park with Yellowstone and Grand Tetons?

No. I am travelling from GNP to Tetons. Trying to bypass Yellowstone, actually.

We preferred the views on the east side as it's higher elevation alpine scenery. The wildlife viewing was also better. So if I had to choose one location (but I'd still prefer to split), I'd probably consider the Rising Sun Motor Inn or somewhere in St Mary. The Going to the Sun Rd is twisty and slow. Hwy 2 runs through a valley south of the park but isn't as scenic. The west side is lower elevation and reminded me of the Pacific NW. I haven't been to the North Fork area so don't know what that's like.

Just now read this post. We are going from Grand Teton National Park to Glacier in two weeks, stopping for 4 nights in between the two big parks in upscale cabins in Red Lodge Montana called the Blue Sky Cabins. They are near the Beartooth Mountain wilderness, deluxe cabins, only 4--we thought a nice break between 2 large parks. We are going to drive through Yellowstone, but don't plan to stop, do hope to see a little wild life on the way.
