Will Going to the Sun highway be open this summer?
|
The offical Glacier National Park website said that major reconstruction will be done until after 2004.

Hello from Northwest Montana. Sun highway will open with a little luck, early this year. Depending on what happens this weekend, and snow is predicted, we could have one of the earliest open date in a long while. Snow crews have pionerred a single lane thriugh the Big Drift and are clearing snow at Logan Pass. However some huge boulders have slid onto the highway and they will have to be drilled and blasted before the road opens. Though we could still see an opening by Memorial day, it looks like probably the first week in June. Major reconstruction money is tied to the national highway bill which is bogged down in congress and local rumur has it that it will be 2006 before we even start to see the beginning of construction. YES, the road will be open this summer! Come on out and enjoy the Great Northwest. |
Woo Hoo! We would like to re-visit Glacier next summer (2005) and I hope your rumors are correct, John! Going to the Sun is my all time favorite scenic drive. We would hate to visit when it is closed.

KARENS Plan now is once constuction starts the road will not be entirely closed but may have long delays or one way traffic. I've been places worst than Sun road tied up in traffic! |
We just returned from Glacier NP. It was beautiful! The GTTS road was open, but had a few spots where traffic is down to one lane, so flow is stopped a few minutes to let traffic thru' one way, then opens for the other way. Longest delay was 10 minutes.

We drove the Going to the Sun Road on June 25 in the rain. There were three short stops (5 -10 min.) due to construction. We stayed at Many Glacier Hotel and the area is gorgeous so don't miss it. Drive the Beartooth and Chief Jos. Highways if you can as all three roads are entirely different.
