Gettysburg PA motels with charm & location?

Can anyone suggest a good, clean motel in Gettysburg that's near the town that might also have charm? It needn't be super special but maybe like a mom and pop that's updated and has a pool. Or, on occaion some chains have added touches to their properties that make them nicer. Any ideas anyone? Thank you in advance!

We like the Quality Inn right downtown, near the visitor center. It's clean and newer and has a nice pool in the front. But you will be taking a car or bus when you tour the battlefields, you can't walk to all of them. It's a wonderful National Park.

Personally, I think Gettysburg is an over-commercialized attempt at saving history. Instead of going there, try Williamsburg, Va. It's TOTALLY real and while it's entertaining in a way, it's done with total class and elegance.

We also liked the Quality Inn. You can walk to the visitor center. I wouldn't call it charming but it's clean and the pool is nice. I would also recommend the audio tape tour of the battlefields. Although I have heard the guides that ride with you are well worth the money. Also don't know what your background is but I enjoyed the "fictionalized" book about Gettysburg by Michael Schaara called The Killer Angels. It made it much more real to me when I actually visited.

Hello Carol

Gettysburg is a great choice! I agree with the Quality Inn suggestion.

There are also a bunch of wonderful little inns all over Gettysburg. Our favorite is right in town called the Gettystown Inn it is next door to The Dobbin House Tavern with a great little bar downstairs! A stay here includes a full breakfast-the drawback would be no pool - there is a front porch swing however.

OH some advice -

DO: Take a bus tour of the battlefield, tour the National museum, see the lighted map, take the Eisenhower Farm tour and visit the shops.

DON'T: Waste your money on the little wax and "historical" museums in town.

E-mail me if you have any specific questions.

Yes, if you haven't already DO read The Killer Angels (or listen to it - the 'reader' is excellent). Even tho it's 136 years ago and the war outcome is no surprise, I wept as the book concluded, it was so very well-done and affecting.
