Gettysburg in the Spring
 

I'll be traveling to Gettysburg in mid-May-any suggestion of,"You gotta c-this when your in PA!"

Great Trip!

You may already be planning this but I consider it a must do to rent or buy the self guided tour on tape that takes you around town and the battlefields at your own pace.

Prior to doing this make sure that you visit the main memorial/museum and attend the battle/historical talk which is given as you sit around a model of the area.

Even my kids who were 11 and 8 at the time found it fascinating.

Instead of the tour on tape we did a similiar tour on a double decker bus it was very nice. I think the museum talk Placeu2 mentioned is the lighted map and it really is good. I wouldn't worry about all the little museums around town as they are mostly a waste of time & money. The Official museum is the best.

Also, the Eisenhower Farm tour is fun. You buy tickets for that at the visitor center.

Last fall we hired a private tour guide, it was well worth the money. I believe it cost $40 for a 2 hour tour. We tipped our guide $20 because he was so thorough.

If you find yourself thirsty for a cold one, try Dobbin's Tavern right in town. The pub is downstairs, very historic. The food was really good as well.

I agree with the previous post regarding the private tour guide. We went last spring and found ours extremely knowledgeable and well worth the additional cost. I also agree with the recommendation regarding the Dobbin house, it is a very nice place for dinner and/or cocktails. If you haven't already read "The Killer Angels" by Michael Shaara; it is a very good, historical fiction account of the battle and well worth your time.

I think the tavern is called the Springhouse Tavern below the Dobbin House restaurant. We stayed at the Gettystown Inn next door and it was very nice.
