Gettysburg/Hershey PA
I thought I was going to stay at the Sheraton in Harrisburg but that fell through.
Now I am looking to spend two days at each of the above without changing hotels. Any suggestions??? |
There should be a fair number of things in between that would be convenient to both, although most of them are not on the level of Sheraton. We have had good experiences with the Country Inn and Suites near Lancaster (Bird-in-Hand I think), but no-one in the family has stayed there for several years. At Hershey there are a number of options, including both the Hotel Hershey (highly regarded but I have no personal experience of it), and the Hershey Lodge (had a very good meal in their restaurant, sister's fiance stayed on business and enjoyed it but thought it was slightly peculiar and kind of overpriced).
Depending on how you feel about driving, it is not completely nuts to stay at one and visit the other. There is also a restored historic hotel in downtown Gettysburg which is run by a national chain (Best Western, I think) which I am very intrigued by but have never stayed at, since we only live about two hours away, at least at the speed DH drives. I would also very highly recommend the American Museum of the Civil War in Harrisburg, and if you like teddy bears, tchotkes, and "shoppingtainment", Boyd's Bear Factory in Gettysburg. Many people adore it, but if that kind of thing is not your cup of tea, you will probably HATE it. |
That's a toughie - I spent many a vaca in that area and I always liked a place near the Lancaster area to see Hershey and the Amish countryside and then a seperate place near Gettysburg for that part of my trip - just easier

Maybe try a B&B?
This site has a map that shows you where the inns/b&bs are located, which should be helpful. http://www.bnbfinder.com/Pennsylvania-Bed-and-Breakfast |
Steviegenie, no I would not like to stay at a B&B, but thank you for the link.
To the others, thanks you for your suggestions. |
There's not a whole lot between Harrisburg and Gettysburg, so I'd suggest staying somewhere closer to Hershey. All three cities are close to major highways so you wouldn't have a problem getting from one to the other.
After thinking about it though, why not stay somewhere near York? Just shoot up I83 to get to Hershey, or over on US30 to get to Gettysburg. Or if you're flying in to Harrisburg, just stay by the airport (which is actually in Middletown). As far as which hotels, I can't really help since I live in Lancaster. |
To summarize the answers (which all seem accurate), there aren't many great motels in Central PA but Gettysburg, Hershey, HBG and Lancaster are all connected by great expressways. The best I could recommend would be the Hilton Garden Inn in Lancaster.Really no need to change rooms!
|
Ah yes, the Hilton Garden Inn is right next to PA283, which will take you directly to Hershey.
Plus, if you're interested, there are just a few touristy things in Lancaster too. |
That sounds like the best bet, thank you all.

About midway between Hershey and Gettysburg is Mechanicsburg. There are lots of decent hotels. Most have been built in the last several years. They include: Country Inn & Suites, Hampton Inn, Wingate by Wyndham, Holiday Inn West, Homewood Suites, and Courtyard by Marriot - all with Mechanicsburg addresses, all convenient to highways. There also is a Best Western that gets OK ratings that runs $70 to $80 a night. This is the area I would recommend for a central location to visit Hershey and Gettysburg while staying at the same place. And sure, if you want to make a run to Lancaster, it's 45 to 60 minutes. I travel to all three of these towns often for work.
