Gettysburg

Planning a meetup with relatives in April or May 2019. Probably a 4 day weekend. The Gettysburg area is convenient. I am looking for a place to stay. 4 couples. The primary idea for the trip is to spend time with these relatives, and not to do extensive tours of the historic sites. So, is downtown Gettysburg a good place to stay? Any hotel recommendations? Is downtown Gettysburg a "walkable" town? Are there restaurants and shops to stroll around?
Thanks

Daughter of a friend attended Gettysburg College. We took a day trip up there to visit the daughter and thought the downtown was thoroughly walkable. There were restos and a couple of very pretty hotels right downtown. I have no first-hand knowledge of them. We DID visit where Lincoln wrote his address and that was neat--however, do google for the most up to date information. I vote yes for Gettysburg downtown being very inviting and walkable.

We were there about 8 years ago to see the Battleground. We stayed at the Gettysburg Hotel which is in the middle of the downtown area. There were several Pubs and restaurants within walking distance. The town is small so it is very walkable with many interesting shops to see.

You can certainly stay in the town of Gettysburg and most of it is walkable. I would suggest checking out a Google map or other to see where you might stay that is centrally located. Also know that on certain weekends you will have tons of visitors/crowds. Check the Gettysburg National Historic site for details of events. AND if the relatives get bored - - - do a battlefield tour on your own or better yet get a guide. They are worth the extra cost.
