Getty Villa - How much time?
My DD is attending a 4 1/2 hour class at Pepperdine. I figure that after I drop her off there, I would use that time in Malibu to explore the Getty Villa. Of course, it all depends on which reservation times they have available. I would just like to know what would be a reasonable amount of time to fully enjoy the Villa & Gardens.
Thanks! |
It's really hard to say. I'd say at least 3 hours. When we were there this past Feb, we took 2 of its free-guided tours (available every hr, each lasts one hour) and they were wonderful. One we took was the general overview, the other was on the architecture and gardens. Either way, even if you don't have enough time, I would still go and enjoy your visit.

I'd say 2 to 3 hours is ample to really enjoy the Villa.
If you have extra time, you can have a great lunch at Malibu Seafood, overlooking the ocean about 5 minutes drive north of Pepperdine, or have a great sandwich at Malibu Kitchen, which is between Pepperdine and the Villa. |
Agreed. 2-3 hrs. Also, make sure to go when it's still nice and sunny.

The grounds and the building are beautiful. As far as the art goes, it just depends on how much you are turned on by Greek urns and such.
When we were there in April, I found myself more interested in the designs of the floors of the various rooms than in some of the objects de arte. When you've had all you can take, head over to Duke's in Malibu and have a drink. Dukes is right on the water--a Malibu institution and blast from the past. |
