Getting to Lexington from Boston
 

I'll be in Boston over Patriot's Day wknd and want to catch the 6AM re-enactment of the battle on Lexington Green on April 19, 1775. Can anybody recommend how to get there using public transportation? I don't plan to rent a car, so will need to either get there by subway, taxi or bus.

This is a tough one. Obviously, you could take a taxi - but that might be expensive. There is no subway to Lexington, but you could take the Red Line to Alewife (Cambridge) and take a taxi from there. I do not know if there are taxis standing by there at that hour or if you would to call one. There also might be a bus from Alewife.

MBTA.com might be helpful if others here don't have more specific information. On that day, check to see if schedule will operate on Sunday/holiday schedule - I think that Patriots Day is one of those holidays.

Public transit will not be running early enough to get you to Lexington by 6 AM. Renting a car would be far cheaper than a taxi both ways, and would allow you to tour the area a bit, get somewhere for lunch, etc.

This is, probably, a common request. Check with the Concierge at your hotel and see what they have to say.

Many Enterprise Rentacars participate in a promotion with greatly reduced prices if you pick up the car >noon on Friday, and return <noon on Monday, but with rather limited miles. Even without using that deal, you can often save with Enterprises that are NOT at/near an airport (no airport fees), but be prepared for some strong-armed pressure to purchase the insurance add-ons.

Watching the Lexington re-enactment would be a memory that stays with you for a long, long time. Everything contributes to a special experience, especially the atmosphere among the people watching and the amazing light at that time of day.

I know of no way to get there through traditional public transportation, though you might find some chartered buses available. The best solution would be to stay in Lexington itself, in the (unlikely) event that lodging is still available. The Battle Green Inn is in the center of Lexington, just a block or two from the re-enactment. The Sheraton Lexington is roughly 2 miles away, and the Holiday Inn express (not sure if it's in Lexington or Burlington) is also about 2 miles away.

There are excursion busses that come out from town. Check with your hotel to see if you can get on one.

I might rent a car and then go to Concord while you are out there.
