Getting married to a French man
Hello everyone. I will be getting married next month to my French fiancée. I am an American man and he is here with a Work visa. We want to move to France in August 2017 to live and work there. I have somewhat researched the topic of getting a Visa to stay in France now that I will be married to a French person, however it doesn't hurt to ask people who've experienced this first hand. If anyone has any advise on how I should go about obtaining this visa and giving me some insight on the process, I would appreciate it greatly. Just one thing to mention, before moving to France We will be traveling in Africa for 5 months, so I am not sure how this will affect the timeline of my visa.

Your husband-to-be should contact the French Consulate for information. Likely he has to sponsor any visa based on marriage, and you cannot apply on your own.

You might post this on the Europe board as well. And look for some expat forums. I assume you have already read everything on the French embassy website?
|
How can you be sure that the answer you get on a TRAVEL board will be the correct one. Seems a lot to ride on.

@Gretchen - StCirq, who posts on the Europe board, is a dual US-Irish national living in France with her US

... husband, I suspect she may have useful things to say. Of course, the French authorities have the last word.
[don't know how I posted half a reply!] |

Now that you've decided to get married -- you (your fiancé actually) must start by contacting the French authorities. |
Thursday, how does that affect this question? She and husband are expats living in France and I might guess not "working".
I stand by the need to talk to real authorities who have the control. But I hope St.Cirq will chime in. |
Oo,la,la!

I'm not an expert but you need to double check on the work visa issue. Once you are married he should be able to get you a visa as a spouse but I don't think this is enough to allow you to work there. Very important to check on that if you are assuming you will have two salaries.
Also, have you started French immersion lessons or are you already fluent? |
I fear :( this quick marriage decision is because the boyfriend's visa to stay in the States is running out (per the other thread). Hope not.
|
@Gretchen - reread what I wrote. I said that the French authorities have the last word. I also pointed out that StCirq is an EU citizen, her difficulties with getting her US husband admitted would be instructive.
|
are you already fluent?
Doubtful given the gender error in the original posting. |
I am not fluent. I am currently taking French classes but I am still a beginner. And thank you Michael, I see the mistake now in my posting.
