Getting from LAX to Getty Museum?

Hi We have a 1 night post cruise stay planned for a hotel near LAX. Would like to make a trip to see the Getty Museum. We are not planing to rent a car. Is there a good public transportation route back and forth to the museum??
Thanks

For public transportation in LA, try

www.mta.net

Nevertheless, when in LA, you should have a car as public transportation is not that frequent nor easy to use.

The Getty Center is a straight shot up Interstate 405 from LAX. Having said that, the traffic is quite bad on 405. So I would suggest travelling during non peak traffic hours.

Also check the Getty Center website for their hours. I believe that on Thursdays they are open late.

It's a beautiful center and one of my favorite places in all LA. Have a great time!

I have very similar questions, due to an 11 hour layover in L.A.:

a) By what time should we leave the Getty for LAX on a FRIDAY afternoon, considering that we'll already be checked in for a flight leaving at 7:55 p.m., but will obviously still have to return the rental car?

b) Does it make sense to rent a car with a navigation system in order to try alternate routes should the I-405 be a mess, or are we best off staying on the freeway no matter what?

Andre:

1. If you leave at 4 PM, you should be just fine. There will be traffic heading southbound on whichever route you choose, but it will not take more than an hour. This will leave you time to return the rental and check in for your outbound flight.

2. Don't bother with GPS. If the 405 is snarled, your alternate route is simply Sepulveda Blvd. southbound. It will take you right to LAX; rental return is clearly marked (just south of the Lincoln Blvd. merge).

Exactly what I needed to know, rjw_lgb_ca!

Thanks a lot!

If you stay at one of the hotels near the Getty you can

1) use the a shuttle to get to and from the hotel

2) have the hotel's courtesy vehicle take you to and from the Getty.

At least that worked when I stayed at the Westwood Doubletree Hotel

Oh yes, one more question after all: where should I stop for gas before returning the rental?

Thanks!

It's just one MTA bus to go from LAX to the Getty, but the 20 minute trip will take over an hour due to the frequent stops that the bus makes.

All times are GMT -8. The time now is 10:00 AM.
