Getting from JFK to La Guardia
 

I'm trying to use my FF miles to get to DFW from Europe. A lot of the options make me change from JFK to La Guardia. They give me 4-5 hours to do it but how difficult/expensive would this be?

I've searched the JFK website to see if there is a shuttle between the two but I don't see anything about it.

The bus ride can take from 15 (6am) minutes to an hour - depending on traffic, accident, road conditions etc.

I would assume 5 hours would be enough time - as long as your plane isn't late. Just realize you will have to go through immigration at JFK and getting your baggage can take a while (up to an hour, depending on what airline and how many planes come in at once). Then you need to wait for a bus, take it to LGA, go through security again and make the flight.

Five hours SHOULD be enough - but there are no guarantees. And - since you'll be traveling on separate tickets if anything goes wrong, neither airline owes you anything - you'll have to buy a new ticket - and perhaps arrange for your own hotel.

The earlier in the day you land the better (shorter time at immigration and fewer delays getting from JFK to LGA) - and the possibility that you're not on the latest plane of the day to DFW.

If you are flying AA all the way you have the advantage that there are essentially hourly flights LGA to DFW.

If you get to LGA early you can quite likely catch the next possible flight, even if it is earlier than the one on which you are scheduled.

If the trip is all on one ticket, if you should miss your connection b/c of a delay in your first flight, they should be willing to put you on the next plane. I'd look carefully at time of year (for both weather and holiday delays) and check how often your first flight comes in on time. The distance b/w the 2 airports is not much, but plane delays, immigration etc. can eat up precious time.
