Getting around the Strip in Vegas
 

We're going in August, so I know it's going to be hot. If we're staying on the strip, will most attractions (hotels, pools, restaurants, casinos, etc.) be within walking distance? Are there any shuttles, buses, or trolleys available (we're not renting a car)?

Yes, you should be able to walk to anything on the strip if you enjoy walking and have plenty of time. That's part of the fun of Vegas. If you want to go further than is convenient to walk, there is a bus. There's also a monorail - but in my opinion, it's not too handy.

There are some shuttle busses in the area - but they mostly are available to take people to off-strip casinos.

We don't usually rent a car and do just fine.

Walking can be no fun in the heat!

The easiest way to get around the Strip (other than expensive cabs) is the Deuce bus. http://www.rtcsouthernnevada/deuce/
It runs up and down the Strip and downtown. It's often a double-decker, so even just riding it for a round trip is like sightseeing! Plus, fares are cheap.

I wouldn't recommend walking from one end of the strip to the other in the middle of summer (especially this summer) but, depending on where you are staying, you could walk to a number of hotels. If you are mid-strip, Bellagio, Caesars, Mirage, Paris, Flamingo, Harrah's and the Venetian are all within walking distance. You can even walk from Bellagio to Caesar's without going outside since there is a walkway connecting them (if I remember correctly).

The strip is long, and you will not want to do much walking in the summer, even at night.

The Deuce will be your lifesaver for $5 for 24-hr pass. There is a trolley also that stops at various hotels but use the Deuce. Do the middle strip hotels in one outing (Bellagio, etc, mentioned above post), and cover the ends of the strip in two groups. Deuce stops at MonteCarol outbound and from there you can visit MC, NYNY, and Exalibur. At Excalibur you can go to Luxor and then to Mandalay Bay via enclosed passageways thru the hotels so you do not have to walk in the heat. There is a free monorail at Mandalay Bay back to Excalibur. Then cross over and visit MGM Grand and the Deuce stop inbound is at the Grand. On the opposite end of the strip, you can get off at the Venetian and use crossovers to Treasure Island and Mirage. There is a Deuce stop at the Mirage.

Do not underestimate the heat. We are used to hot summers but 114 will get you quickly if you are out in it very long--even if it is "dry" heat :)
