getting around Chicago

Besides the motorized Segways to get around Chicago are there any other motorized bikes or golf carts to rent? My son is 10 and will not be able to use the Segways.

Can you explain what you mean by "get around Chicago"?

My understanding of the Segway tour is that it's only really a tour of the sites along the lakefront. If you're talking about exploring other parts of the city, I don't think you will be able to take a Segway or any other form of motorized transport you've mentioned in your post.

I mean getting around the riverfront area. Are there any other motorized forms of transportation.

Yes, you can rent bicycles and multi-person cycles (holds 4 in 2 rows and is canopied). Definitely no golf carts. Here is a great site:

I still think there may be a misunderstanding. The segways are not for "getting around" anywhere, at least as I understand that term to mean. You don't just rent them and use them as transportation. They're part of an organized tour, where you follow the tour leader from one point to the next, seeing what they tell you to see, for a limited time duration.

Are you looking for motorized transport along the lake front paved path to use to go where you want, when you want? I doubt any such thing exists.

But, if you have a specific desire of transport (motorized or not) from one location to another, or for a specific purpose, maybe post those needs and someone can help you find the best option. Is this for someone with limited mobility, just for fun, for going from navy pier to museum campus, just for exploring, for 1 hour, for several days, etc.

Gapper - do you mean "riverfront" or "lakefront". The Segway tours are along the lakefront.

Walking and the EL is the best way to get around Chicago. You can supplement with the occaisional cab.

The bus system is pretty darn good too.

Should a 10 yr old be operating motorized transportation, or only be a passenger? Whether is was walking, bicycling, or driving, I wouldn't want to be in proximaty of such a young driver.

How about those scooters (Razor??) -- those ones that fold and have wheels of about 4" diameter? You could bring one from home with you .. or just use feet, L, bus & cab.
