German Village, Ohio
 

I saw a posting that mentioned German Village.
I have never heard of it. Any details? hotels? distance from the airport? or travel from NY? thanks

hello Powerpuffy, I used to live in German Village. Its a nice little area just south of the beautiful downtown Columbus. Its about a five to ten min. drive from the airport. There are some really nice places to eat and a few things to check out. reply back and let me know what your into and ill make some reccomendations.

Message: Having relocated from a relatively large land-locked state where it takes 2 1/2 hours just to pass the borders to the Midwest-East Coast where cities are closer by, I took a fair share of roadtrips:

March: Pittsburgh and Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece in Pennsylvania's Laurel Highlands

July: Philadelphia, with one of the best downtowns I've seen

September: New York City -- all the touristy stuff in Manhattan

October: Columbus, OH - seductively quaint German Village and downtown

I spent the most time and money in Philly, and would love to go back to enjoy more of the museum of art. But I was completely enamored of Columbus' German Village, the oldest registered historic preservation district in the country, with its wonderful cottages and businesses. I'd want to live there.

We were in CMH last year. We stayed downtown and walked down to German Village. Ate some great apple strudel in a charming coffee shop. Hit some antique stores (wish I would have bought more things...darn!).

I don't recall a hotel IN German Village. German Village is just an area south of downtown, like the previous poster mentions.

We pass thru Columbus on our way to our hometown and stop often in German Village. We have stayed for a weekend at the Westin Great Southern which is walking distance to German Village. We had a suite and it was great. It is a historic hotel that has housed John Barrymore, Teddy Roosevelt and Sarah Bernhardt You could also look up B&B's in the village as they have a few. We just like walking German Village, it will remind you of Europe. They have a book store with 32 small rooms that we love to wander thru. Schmidts (sp?) Restaurant is the place to go for German Food. The bahama mama's are always on our plate!

I spent only a weekend in Columbus and bedded down at a Motel 6 close to the OSU campus, so I'm not sure of any hotels in the actual neighborhood, although downtown Columbus, a walk away, does have some hotels.

I'd read about German Village when I was writing a paper about architectural controls. The German Village preservation society is one of the oldest and most effective. Residents who maintain the original materials and styles of their homes the best are awarded prizes. The bricked cottages and streets really do take you back to a simpler time -- when German immigrants constituted about a quarter of the central Columbus population during the turn of the 20th century. The village itself is the most popular Columbus attraction, besting even OSU football.

I second cd's comments. I loved that bookstore and the Cup O'Joe adjacent to it. I visited (fortuitously, accidentally) during Oktoberfest and had a great time.
