German Food in Washington D.C.
Any comments on the following German Restaurants would be appreciated Thanks, Sandra Old Europe at 2434 Wisconsin NW Kafe Leopolds 3318 M St. NW Café Mozart 1331 H St. NW Café Berlin 322 Mass Ave NE |
I have not eaten at Kafe Leopolds.
Of the remaining, I would rate Old Europe first, Café Mozart second, and Café Berlin third. Although all three are acceptable. Old Stein Inn in Mayo, MD is better than any of them, if that's an option. |
Old Europe has a bit of a kitschy/older interior, but I love it. Food is surprisingly good (especially if you come at asparagus fest time). Haven't been to the others.

Have only been to Old Europe myself. It used to be well regarded (made Washingtonian Magazine's 100 Best list for many years) but I think Herr Herrold sold the restaurant and it seems to ahve gone downhil. The service was spotty at best the last time I went several years ago and I haven't been back. It hasn't been on the 100 Best list for some time now.
If you don't mind venturing to VA for Austrian fare (and don't mind a not-quite-table-service setup), Cafe Monti in Alexandria and Cafe Tirolo in Arlington are both excellent. |
Doesn't Tom Sietsema of the Post recommend a German restaurant in either Rockville or Frederick? I forget the name. As for my experience, I very much like the Bay Wolf in Rock Hall, MD on Maryland's Eastern Shore which offers a mixed cuisine of Austrian and Chesapeake cooking.
