Georgia mountains or coast
Flying into ATL for one week stay this fall. Five days available for road trip. Trying to decide between the Northern Mountains or coastal drive including Savannah and Charleston. Any advice?

Now the North Georgia mountains are lovely, but if you are expecting them to be the BIG mountains like you see in the Rockies, you will be disappointed. If we don't have an early cold snap, the leaf color won't be much either. It's a nice peaceful drive.
I would drive over to Charleston for a couple of days, then down to Savannah until you have to get back to Atlanta.
It all depends on what you would like to see.

If you haven't been to the south, go to Charleston and Savannah and sop up the history. They are really interesting. I note from other posts you live in Oregon, so I don't think the GA mts will impress you.

Just north of Atlanta - about an hour away I think is a little town in the mountains aptly called Pine Mountain. It is beautiful & full of charm. There are some gardens there - I can't remember the name, but they are great & there's a butterfly house where you can see thousands of butterflies in one place. Sometimes they land on you.

This is two very different places. If you want city things to do, then Savannah and Charleston are the places to go. If you want small towns and hiking in the mountains then the mountains are the place to go. I prefer the mountains to the towns but that is me -- what do you enjoy?
The colors change in the mountains the later part of October of beginning of November -- hard to call it. So if you are interested in that, then I would consider that time frame. Also, this time of year there are a lot of festivals in the mountains.
What do you enjoy doing? That would help us give you advice.
