Georgia coastline stopover

I wil be travelling with 4 children (8 to 14 yrs.old)from VA to Florida. I would like to break the trip up with a stop-over somewhere in Georgia or N. Florida. What is fun with kids?

You realize that in Georgia the coast is quite a drive from I-95? I would stop in Savannah.

I recommend St. Simons, Jekyll or Amelia Islands.

If you want a beach, you could get off I95 and go to Tybee outside Savannah, Jekyll Island outside Brunswick or Amelia Island in Florida. If you are heading to Florida beaches, then I wouldn't do a GA beach on the way. Savannah might be a difficult to manage with 4 kids. They probably would enjoy the horse-drawn carriage tour best.

Amelia Island is around a 20 minute drive (or more) off of I-95, so it's a little out of the way. St. Simons and Jekyll Islands are also 20-30 minutes away from I-95, but there's much more to do than Amelia...though Amelia has a much nicer beach. St. Augustine, FL would be my recommendation for those with children. There is a lot to do: the Alligator farm is very cool, the old city is very charming with lots of restaurants and shops, and many attractions such as The Fountain of youth, Ripley's believe it or not, and the Old Jail. The beaches are great here as well.

St. Augustine. I took my children at about this age and they were very impressed with the Ripley Museum (which I skipped to shop) and a ghost tour. Jekyll has a water park but not a great beach. St. Simoon's has fun shops for kids, but again, not much of a beach. I love both of them, but I still vote for St. Augustine for kids.

we've driven from md to fl a number of times with young children. we've stopped in st simons, jekyll island, hilton head and beaufort. the first two were only about 15-20 min off 95--certainly not "quite a drive" especially when faced with staying right on 95.

of the 4, i liked jekyll island the best--by far. coming from md (we are about 1 1/4 hrs from dc), it was about a 11-12 hour drive for us so going any further would have been tough.

As a frequent visitor I would opt for Amelia Island as well. I-95 tends to bend away from the coast the farther north you go.
