Geckos in Paradise - Oct
The geckos are coming - 50 of the most glorious geckos you've ever seen - as Geckos in Paradise, Hawaii's first ever community outdoor art exhibition and charity fundraising event, arrives in downtown Honolulu and Waikiki in the month of October in recognition of National Breast Cancer awareness month.
Organized by the Kapi'olani Health Foundation as a fundraiser for the Breast Center at Kapi'olani Women's Center, the once-in-a-lifetime Geckos in Paradise art exhibit will put 50 five-foot-long sculpted fiberglass geckos on display around town. Each of these gorgeous, groovy, gargantuan geckos will sport a unique ?personality,? thanks to the imagination of the local artists who decorate them. www.geckosinparadise.com |
My city, Fort Myers, had Pelicans in Paradise. They were large sculptural pieces placed throughout our community. Many businesses sponsored one. There were small replicas made for purchase. There are still thousands of these that seemed to get tucked into the goodie bag for any number of fundraising luncheons. I seriously doubt much was raised on the small replicas.
I am hardpressed this morning to remember the group raising the money but at the time, they did get a good deal of press. Good luck with your project. LilMsFoodie |
Sounds like the guitars they do every year around the city of Cleveland (mostly at the Rock in Roll Hall of Fame). They are auctioned off, for something... not sure.
Geckos sound cool! |
In Chicago we had Cows on Parade....Somehow Geckos in Paradise seems so much cooler!!
|
In Seattle we had Pigs on Parade. I remember when I first saw them and did not know the background...I thought the city had lost it! LOL!

..I love these programs and the art ! I just saw ORCAS IN THE CITY in Vancouver and Victoria...you can see them all at www.orcasinthecity.com , Orca Gallery....They are so beautiful to come across walking around town, so creative and a wonderful addition to the cities they inhabit, and a great fundraiser....

In Toronto we had moose. They auctioned them off and I see them all over the city usually in front of office buildings. One place I pass by puts clothing on their moose to reflect the season. For example, in June they had him/her wearing a cap & gown to reflect school graduation. Very cute!
