Gear for First Alaska Trip
 

We are taking a cruise to Alaska for the first time and intend to do the 4 Glacier excursion but are not sure what kind of gear to pack. Can anyone advise whether we need to pack Winter jackets and other associated gear? We are travelling in the next 2 weeks

You need a jacket, hat, gloves, rainwear--all the usual for cold, wet weather. But also take warm weather clothes. When you aren't moving it can get warm.

One thing I never see posted that I wished I had was eye covers for sleeping. Unless you are in an inside cabin, the all night light may bother you. I could never get the curtains to keep out all the light.

We took the ferry from Bellingham to Skagway at the end of July. It can be very cold and windy on deck. Gloves and hats are essential. (My husband's ears get cold easily.) I liked wearing a polar fleece zip front jacket with a high neck and a light weight hooded rain shell I got at an LL Bean outlet (it came with rain pants too). The shell comes down mid-thigh. My husband prefers a rain poncho. Waterproof hiking boots are also essential. Mine are more like shoes. Packing was easier without bringing the bulky winter coats. I could still wear a turtleneck and sweatshirt under the polar fleece. I wore sports sandals when I wasn't wearing the hiking boots. We spent one afternoon outdoors in the rain and did fine but we are used to cold weather. Don't forget binnoculars!

As stated, layers will be necessary, with knit hat and gloves. I also recommend 2 pair of walking shoes and rain gear- a long poncho will do.

I've never taken a winter jacket.

Traveling solo- are there any group excursions to Alaska for a week or so- adeventure, fish, hike,, etc.

I am doing Alaska trip (Homer/Seward) in the middle of June. I am going to wear the following layers during day-long ocean trips:

T-shirt
Long-sleeved Timberland shirt
Warm winter sweater (no neck though)
Lightweight waterproof jacket w/hood.

Ski hat,gloves,hiking boots,jeans.

Do I need something to cover the neck, like a scarf? The jacket can be zipped up, but will that be enough ? Also, do I really need gloves ?

Just got back from a twelve day Inside Passage cruise from Seattle to Juneau. Don't pack your winter coats; fleece under waterproof rain gear will suffice. You will need light weight gloves, a waterproof hat, and waterproof shoes for hiking. Dress in layers starting with a short sleeved T-shirt, long sleeved shirt, a sweater or fleece long sleeved shirt, and rain gear. I would also recommend bringing a pair of long thermal underwear for damp windy days and a couple of turtle necks. Pack pants that will dry out quickly or consider purchasing rain gear if you plan on much outdoor hiking. Don't forget to bring a waterproof backpack to carry your camera, binnoculars, and other gear. Enjoy!

I also just got back this week. I did not have a winter coat with me and was completely warm when I layered with a rain coat being my heaviest jacket. Some days I only had on a hooded sweatshirt. It does get cold on boat decks, so gloves and a hat would be a good idea. Have fun. You will love Alaska.
