Gay Friendly Beaches in NC

Hello to readers at Fodor's.
I am writing to ask advice of experienced travellers from the southeastern US.
We are a gay biracial couple who like beach vacations. Here in San Diego we seldom get any flack or dirty looks when we walk on the beach or even hold hands and such.
We hear that North Carolina has great beaches but that attitudes aren't quite as open toward people like us.
Can anyone suggest any beaches which might be welcoming and comfortable? Are there any predominantly gay bars near the coast?
We don't care for the Key West scene BTW.

Both Carolinas have family-oriented beaches. Please stay in California!

Is it just my imagination, or is this a repeat of a post several months ago?
Or was that another gay bi-racial couple looking for a beach and concerned about the attitudes?

I think you will find most Atlantic coast beaches diiisappointing, coming from the Pacific coast. The Atlantic coast is a lot flatter and much less scenic. As a gay couple on the east coast, you might try one of the cities on the coast, maybe Charleston SC or Savannah GA. Personally, my favorite on the east coast is Rehoboth Beach in Delaware. It is a small, rather quaint, beachtown, not far from Washington DC, which is very gay popular. As far as travel information, Fodors sell a really great gay guide to travel as well as you might try Planetout.com. Good luck.

I say screw the 'family-oriented' response since in this instance it is used to mask hate and ill-will. Many southern folks are just plain nice and have just not gotten around to meeting folks like you yet.

John, if you are sincere, Ocracoke Island is a great place to visit. People will probably stare at you, but don't they anyway? Many of the innkeepers are Gay, I, persoanally find it adoring. Others may not. So what. It is a beautiful place to visit, and I, as a native North Carolian, will smile at and welcome you.

We have gay or biracial people looking for a beach here about every 3 months. It is nice for people to give nice answers, but you're giving them to imaginary people.

Yes, I think the last time the gay biracial couple wanted to know if they would get stared at if they walked down the beach at Myrtle Beach making out.

On the off chance that this couple is real, I expect there are probably some gay bars in Wilmington, and the beaches there aren't too bad, though I like the ones on Bogue Banks better.
