Gas stations nearby Newark Airport

I'm dropping off a rental car at Newark Airport and would like information on the location of nearby gas stations. I'll be using less than half a tank don't want to pre-pay for a full tank. I usually fly out of JFK, but not Newark. Anyone?

If you map the airport on maps.google.com and then use the search nearby feature and type in gas stations, you'll get all the options. http://tinyurl.com/3rql6y6

I live 20 miles west of the airport and worked at the airport while in college. I grew up in Staten Island, lived in Hoboken. Basically, I've approached the airport from every possible direction.

Google maps can tell you where the stations are - but it isn't going to tell you that X station is in a really bad area of Newark or Elizabeth. There are stations in Newark - but that would send you into a confusing section of road if it puts you in a place like Route 21/McCarter highway. There is a lot of truck traffic in the area and the area around the airport interconnects two major highways and multiple roads that aren't so easy to back-track on with knowing where you are going.

Where you coming from? That's going to dictate the best place to top off - not the google map near the airport.

If on the New Jersey Turnpike coming from the South heading North, use the rest stop just past Exit 11. Think it's the Grover Cleveland stop.

If coming from the North via the Eastern Spur (the route that comes from the Lincoln Tunnel) use the Alexander Hamilton stop in Secaucus.

If coming from the North vis the Western Spur (GW Bridge direction) use the Vince Lombardi area.

Whether coming from the South or North, the rest stops are within 10 to 15 miles from the airport. If you top off, that should still have you come in at full.

If coming from the West, via route 78, the nearest stations are on Route 1/9 to the South of the airport. You could also fill-up at these stations if coming off the NJ Turnpike. Just need to know which direction as the exit off the turnpike will make a difference.

There are numerous stations to the South of the airport heading towards Elizabeth. Just be aware, that if heading South to get gas, most turns in NJ across major roads require a right turn into a jug handle to go left in the opposite direction.

A better idea: www.GasPriceWatch.com

It will not only tell you where the gas stations are, but an update on their prices, their hours of operation, the types of gas they sell, and whether they take credit cards. All of those are quite important to your search, but you won't get that info on Google.

I don't know if we would have found the car rental drop off area if we hadn't had an Avis satnav, pre-set with the location. The address that they provided was useless. Once you are there, the skytrain takes you quickly and easily to your terminal
