Gas stations in Honolulu/Waikiki
 

Hello, <BR> I recently read gas prices are $2.01+ <BR>in and around Honolulu ? That's way higher <BR>than I had expected. We are going later this month and have been told it's a must to rent a car rather than taking the buses or trolley ? Agree or not ? <BR>If we rent a car we have a couple of gas cards ($25 each) that will really be a huge help on expenses, but they are Citgo cards --does anyone know if they have "Citgo" stores in the area ? Or --what types they "do" have ?

Forget about the car rentals... All major hotels charge an arm 'n a leg to park... Take 'THEBUS'. It's very reliable, gets you anywhere you want to go, and is a great way to meet the locals.. Have fun!!

Tina, <BR> <BR>Gas is indeed close to $2.00 a gallon. However, distances are relatively short - so it is unlikely that you would end up spending huge amounts of money on gas. (I moved to Hawaii from Georgia a few years ago and when I left Georgia gas was about $0.70 per gallon - and I was in shock at paying $1.90 per gallon in Hawaii.) <BR> <BR>No Citgo stations on island. We have Tesoro, Shell, Union 76, Chevron. Many tourists manage to get around just fine with the bus and/or trolly. Parking may be expensive at your hotel - you may want to check on that. Alternatively, you could rent the car for just a day or so if there was something you wanted to see that wasn't easily accessible without a car.

You can get around with bus and trolley, but why bother if you're on vacation? Do you really want to wait around at bus stops when you could be zipping around in your a/c car or convertible? Yeah, gas is expensive there, but, as psigirl points out, distances are relatively short and you be filling up too often. Get a small compact or economy car if you're really concerned about gas consumption. If you just want to laze around on the beach at your hotel, though, perhaps you won't need a car for the entire time. You really should have a car, though, if you want to go up to the North Shore.

Troll alert. If you can't afford an extra 50 cents a gallon for gas, you should probably stay home.
