Definitely going to watch the miles per gallon this summer.

And it's just ridiculous that any increase in the price of crude oil instantaneously is transferred to the pump (never mind the barrel of oil may take weeks to reach the very same pump)but any decrease in the price of crude oil lags for the very same weeks.

Just filled my tank yesterday:

$4.39/gallon

San Francisco Bay Area

nytraveler Feb 29th, 2012 05:16 PM

Over $4.00 in NYC area - higher in Manhattan.

Easy to save money - drive the size car you really need (and shop based on actual needs and number of people that will be in the car) - not 1 person in a giant SUV.

(Also drive at a moderate speed and don't brake until you have to.)

ronkala Feb 29th, 2012 05:19 PM

$3.65 in town of Woodstock, $3.69 at the I-81 exits (VA)

$3.75 in Iowa City. I think it was $3.55 when I filled up a week ago.

Guys now you know why we have smaller cars, avg UK price is $8.03per gallon.

Tomsd Mar 1st, 2012 04:52 AM

Totally agree with NYtraveler: Why do people drive these big - gass guzzling SUV's which also mash smaller cars when there are accidents. I went down to my YMCA to work out yesterday afternoon, and was unfortunately in the busy 5 PM hour - and had to wait for 3 different women (excuse me but most of them can't drive SUV's very well - nor can some guys) - backing up and forth to try and get into or out of a parking space.

And only about half of them had a child or two with them.

Just ridiculous.

And as for our European friends, yes, you have always paid more for gas/petro but what if your prices had gone up 50% or more in the past few years. How would you feel about that? :)

"Why do people drive these big - gass guzzling SUV's which also mash smaller cars when there are accidents. "

. . cause they smash smaller cars if there is an accident . .

It has definitely gone up more than 50% in the past few years. As the wholesale price goes up so does the price at the gas station. The price of gas in the US is NOT expensive.

christabir Mar 1st, 2012 11:43 AM

It's over $17/gallon in the US if you include the cost of our military presence around the world to protect the supply. Unconfirmed reports of an explosion on a pipeline in Saudi Arabia have increased the price of oil by 5% this afternoon.

Oil trading used to mean that investment firms who invested in oil had to actually take delivery of that oil. Too much speculation now without that requirement.

I think our gas is about $4.20/gal.

Ways to save gas - drive less ;) We have conserved gas for a long time - live in town reasonably close to where we work and play, take transit, work from home, batch errands, take the most efficient car on long trips, etc.

We aren't changing our summer plans. We have 2 trips up to the mountains planned, approximately 600 miles round trip each. The car gets 30mpg, so the difference in gas cost at $4.5/gallon versus $3.50/gallon is $20 per trip. Not going to break the bank.
