Gas Prices Curtail Your travel plans
 

OK Fodorites. The Question of the day is. With gas prices soon to reach $ 3.00/gal
Are you still planning to drive on your next trip. And at what price per gal would you decide not to drive.

Our monthly gas bill just for going to work is now near $500.00. I think we may not go to California (Bay Area) as we had planned. We will probably just do more local things like camping and going to the beach. We will wait and see if the prices stay high.

I will live all year on peanut butter sandwiches before I let fuel costs affect my travel plans.

The maximum that I will drive, is 6 hours - one way. That allows me a trip to Ohio (410 mi.) to see my folks or a trip to Amelia Island (370 mi.)which we do frequently. Cost increase at $5/gal. (about double current prices) for me would be maybe $75 more. That is not signicant when you factor in all the other costs involving a trip. Otherwise, I am getting on a plane. It has no impact at all.

Since we travel in Europe a lot and gas averages a good $5.00 or more a gallon, I guess it won't stop me at home when it reaches $3.00.

Does not bother us at all. We will be leaving May 16th and driving to Alaska. Will be gone for two months.

I do realize that in the overall scheme of things $1 a gallon more will not break me but I can't help but feel I'm being gouged. I suppose I am spoiled for having cheap gas for so long. It won't affect our travel plans but we will be eating out less in our daily lives.

I always have to fly everywhere from where I live, but I'm hoping to be in the States in October and plan to either fly or drive from Houston to Rotonda. It is going to be a family getaway and whether we fly or drive will depend on the gas prices vs. airfare at that time.

So, no...the gas prices will definitely not curtail any of my travel plans, but may ultimately be a deciding factor in how I get to a certain destination. :)

On our major road trip last year the gas averaged $2.26 a gal. What is another 50-75¢. If an additional $100 or so is going to slow you down then I would think you could not afford the trip in the first place. Happy Motoring!

I have lowered my speed in recent years. I don't know if it's fuel cost or just the fear or speeding ticket. But with my car, there's a significant difference in mileage when going 78 (what I'm doing now), and 85-90.

I didn't let it stop me when it was $3 last fall.

My husband decided this winter he wanted something that got better gas mileage than his big Expedition.

He now gets 3 MPG less in his big massive pick up truck.

No - but then I get over 30 MPG on the highway - don;t know what the people who get 10/12 will do 0- but I understand SUV sales are way down. And now no one wants to take then at the car rental offices.

Besides the cost of fuel is so small in comparison to hotels, meals, sightseeing etc - does it really make a difference?

The cost of gas is crazy. Of course, we just all keep paying so why would the oil companies not continue to raise it--but what choice do we have?
Does Bush even care???? I think not.

Petroleum products have been amazingly inexpensive in our country for a long time. It is unfortunate, but it takes something like increasing gas prices to encourage funding for seeking alternative means of energy. It is well worth the cost to me, to become less dependent on oil in the long run.

I think it all needs to be put in perspective.

Let's say you have a 20 gal gas tank and it takes you two tanks of gas to get to your vacation destination.

At $2 a gal X 40 gal = $80

At $3 a gal X 40 gal - $120

Is an extra $40 one way, or $80 round trip a show stopper for anyone not to go on vacation? ((b))

Just got back from a 1500 mile trip - I don't think that there is any price at which we wouldn't take a road trip.

Nope does not phase us any.

I'll take Budman's example one step further -- to an extreme. In 2001 we drove 16,000 miles to Alaska and back (from Florida and not going the short way). I estimate that we used almost 1000 gallons of gas. So even if that trip cost $1000 more (an extra dollar per gallon), spread over the 150 days we were gone, it means the whole trip would have been $6.67 a day more expensive. Enough to cancel the whole thing? No way!

I'll take Budman's example in a different way also.

$80 extra for roundtrip.

$500 extra throughout the year for electric bills.

$500 extra throughout the year for items at stores because store owners pass on additional costs to consumers.

etc.

etc.

etc.

I can't afford to go on a trip.

But, Bush and his oil rich cronies can!
