Hi All,

I'm in the Hampton Inn, just up the road from beautiful downtown Galax, VA where the 9th Annual Leaf and String Festival is just finishing up.

For those of you who like the old-time country music(not bluegrass)this is, if not a must at least a worthwhile place to visit if you are anywhere nearby.

We are pleased with the motel: nice room, flat-screen TV, comfortable beds, quiet AC, good service, OK bkfst included in price.

The festival takes place on about 4 blocks in Galax, with performances on two stages. The bands range from Good to Quite Good.

It's fun.

Bring your own folding chairs.

Parking is no problem. No parking meters on the streets.

You are in my neck of the woods, Ira. Enjoy yourself. If others are interested the New River Trail State Park in Galax is wonderful for biking and walking (and a little tubing if you're into it). Chestnut Creek coffee house on the main street, 100 block, does a very nice job on sandwiches, coffee drinks, etc. Purple Feet is a charming little wine shop. Not a whole lot in Galax, but enough........ Have fun.

We used to visit quite a bit when my in-laws lived in Ground Hog Mountain. We own a little bit of land in Orchard Gap, but have not been able to visit it in quite some time - it is loaded with poison ivy. It's right up the road from Levering's Orchard where we have fond memories of picking cherries and apples.

The music is fun throughout the area.

I was at Leverings today. Cherries r ripe and gorgeous!

Yum!!! We love that area. Our name connects us to it, even though DH family is not from there (that we know of). We spent a lot of time in Mt. Airy a few years ago. Think Andy Griffith and the mall and you know our last name. We keep talking about taking a vacation up that way and things happen.

It is such a great area. I actually live closer to Pilot Mountain (Mt. Pilot, where the fast girls live) but spend a good deal of time in Mt. Airy. A lot happening there, new wineries, some nice shops, restaurants which go a bit beyond the meat and three, and a regional museum. Come on back. Mt. Airy is a finalist for friendliest city in the USA and they are doing their best to win.
