Just googled it. Fortunately, it was in the opposite way of our walks!

Count me as another fan of Carl's.
TD, really enjoyed your report, as always. You are an entertaining writer. Did you and M consider visiting the Kenmore mansion? I've wondered about that place for years but have never managed to make a point to stop there. OK, you arty farty types. If you haven't already seen the William Merritt Chase exhibition currently showing at the Phillips, add it to your list. Admirer of JSS, Chase was teacher to an amazing array of artists (Hopper, Bellows, O'Keefe and Marin among them!). The exhibition includes work by those artists when they were students of Chase. Birdie, after your Jefferson break you'll need a follow on Kimpton break in Dupont Circle. :) |
Thank you very much for your kind words, obxgirl. No, M and I simply walked and talked (not in that order).
The WM Chase exhibit at the Phillips goes to 11 September. It sounds incredible. I didn't realize he taught the artists you mentioned above. |
Janet, I am sure it was a fun experience and I will bet our paths crossed. In those years I drive between Quantico and Winston-Salem faily often and Carl's was worth the detour
|
Well, well, well. I just realized who the McGlothlins are, obxgirl. I'm not sure I want to see her stupid art collection. Is that where they spent their pulled 12 mil WM donation?
|
Probably. :((
I am traitor to the alma mater. Stupid cross. Mea culpa. |

Taylor Reveley is coaxing them back into the fold. Their bio page on the college website neglects to mention that her first husband was Paul Verkuil.
They have a whiff of Jay Gatsby. In total though that collection is a game changer for the VMFA. Better there than in some overdone Bristol VA country estate. |
"website neglects to mention that her first husband was Paul Verkuil." Uh huh. Miss Fran has some history with our town. She's not viewed in a positive light and it's not just the cross mess.

You predate me on this topic. All ears. :) |
Word had it that as First Lady of The College, she thought very highly of herself expected to have a table held at The Trellis especially for her. The introduction to James at the dinner party where there was "instant chemistry" occurred when she was still married to Paul. Despite the tawdry gossip about the two, someone has excellent taste in art. The collection is amazing and gorgeous. When it's complete, it will be a must see for any art lover interested in that time period.
