GA or NC?

We are planning a summer trip to the beach. We've done the outer banks, and thought we wanted something similar, but less crowded. I found an oceanfront house on N. Topsail Beach that might be nice. But then I saw a house on Jekyll Island off the coast of GA. It's more subtropical, and we could stop at Savannah and Charleston on the way there or back. We've been wanting to see those historic areas. I don't know much about the beach itself on Jekyll Island, though. One deciding factor would be if Jekyll has alot of bugs -- that's not something websites tend to discuss. My daughter is highly allergic to bug bites. We have found that staying on the ocean helps keep bugs away because of the breeze, but the greenery on the pictures of Jekyll make me wonder how buggy it might be. The greenery is also what attracts us to it. Any comments?

I love Jeckyll Island, but it definitely has bugs in season.

Bugs are a fact of life in the low country. Use a bug spray with deet and you will be fine.

As GoTravel said, bugs WILL be at the beach if you get a land breeze==one coming from the land side rather than the ocean. And it does happen.
I would look for a place like Wild Dunes or Pawley's Island for a lovely beach and place to stay. Can visit Charleston from WD if you want--or Georgetown. Great eating. Easy to get to, although you don't say where you are coming from.

Hi Style,

We have a house on N. Topsail - it's a great place in the summer and, just like the Outer Banks, relatively few bugs. The only time we've seen a few mosquitos is outside on the porch at night when there's very little ocean breeze.

Wilminton is an easy drive, and I think it's historic district is fantastic - plus great shopping on the waterfront area. Also close by is New Bern and the colonial Governor's Mansion. Just south of Wilmington is Fort Fischer and the North Carolina Aquarium.

On Topsail Island is the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital, which you can visit and get a close up view of these amazing creatures.

Best wishes, SusanEva
