FYI - Anthony Bourdain No Reservations
He's in Hawaii tonight!
i'm there!
I wish I can be there too :)
I'd MUCH rather be there than at my school board meeting finding out how many jobs are going to be cut!
Oh boy, Ono Hawaiian Food and Sidestreet Inn, good stuff.
thanks for the info - just set my dvr!
I guess he isn't going to critique a luau.... Darn it.
I'm going to Side Street tonight with the PR firm that brought him to Hawaii. Funny, I couldn't find out how to meet him (maybe they knew I'd slobber and say stupid things) but they'll invite me to watch the show!
Here's the line from the flacks: Tag along with chef and author Anthony Bourdain as he travels around Oahu and Hawaii's Big Island to dispel the common myths of Hawaii...some of them his own. It's no longer just about the luau, tiki drinks, and aloha shirts. In Hawaii, he finds a mixture of cultures that create delicious eats found nowhere else.
I'm watching right now with my husband, who refuses to go to Hawaii because like Tony said it's the U.S.
I hope by the end of the show I'll convince him to go! |
So Melissa, how were the pork chops?
I enjoy his shows most of the time, usually very practical.
On one show from China, Beijing I think, he was waxing eloquent about the food, then ended with "paradise tonight, bathroom hell tomorrow" LOL |
Heyyyy percy, long time no "see!"
curiousgeo, I had some pork chops tonight (obligatory) but if you read my blog, you will see I'm not really that into them. I prefer the fried rice, spicy chicken, and lilikoi ribs! And gizzards! www.myadvertiser.com/kakaako I talked to Side Street owner/chef Collin Nishida after the show tonight and he seems amused by all the attention his restaurant gets from travel-oriented sources--Anthony Bourdain, Fodors, etc.--but the reality is, tourists never go to Side Street. The extra publicity is nice, I'm sure, but when you look around in Side Street on any given night, the place is packed and it's all locals. |
Nice blog, never knew it was there on the Advertiser site. Great pictures too, reminds me to order the fried rice next time I'm there.
I have seen a curious and interesting cross section of people at Side Street -- from very blond tourists to very local locals, young and old, dressed up and casual -- it's pretty amazing how so many different kinds of people find this place. And it really is just an unassuming bar, not even a very nice one. But the food is just great!
I wonder if the show has enough influence to give Ona Hawaiian and the other places he mentioned a business boost (not that they need it).
It's been a while since I've been to Side Street - the show reminded me it may be time to go back. The parking is sometimes a crapshoot, though.
I was wondering, though - what AB referred to as "baby abalone" - was that opihi? If so, they were giant sized. When my cousins from Denmark were visiting last summer, my dad took them to Side Street a couple of times - they loved it there. |
I had to tape the show last night, but did catch a few minutes when he visited Uptown Fountain. He really beat the bushes to go there, talk about a hole in the wall.
I tried the "maasan" he had there, egg omelet over rice with a choice of curry, stew or brown gravy. Really tasty comfort food. |
I'm planning my first trip to Oahu so it was fun watching the show last night. I even got my husband to watch and he usually can't 'light' long enough in front of the tv to watch anything.
I had the Side Street Inn on our list and now I really want to go. I wonder why the didn't do a Plate Lunch place? They talked out them, but didn't really show one. I also had La Miriana on my list too. I've heard that it was for sale so I'm hoping for more reasons than one that it stays open. We've been to Kauai several times and love local food, but I'm kind of at a loss as to where we should eat on Oahu. Rainbow Drive-In? How's that place. Also it was pretty funny that he liked Puka Dog so much. On another forum Puka Dog threads go off the rails! Such passion generated by processed meat item! |
In the above post i meant La Mariana. Sorry.
