BonnieB, thanks for starting this great thread. All the replies... whoda thunk New Jersey would arouse such loving passion?
Glad Bb and JJ that you both enjoy "Avalon" too. It's like watching home movies, isn't it, of a certain time in America--preTV, then the first TV sets, Howdy Doody, etc etc, and the effects on families? A masterpiece.

Whenever I see a character in the movies that "plays" from NJ. Example: the female lead in "My Cousin Vinny"- I always see relevant context to my girlhood in S.Side Chicago neighborhoods.
And we had a huge proportion of very successful and even famous people come out of those as well. Don't want to name drop, but McCarthy who took the bullet for Reagan used to sit right next to me in grammar school.
Better be careful and watch how badly I am dating myself, especially with the holidays around the cornor. Next thing you know I will be talking about my Princess SummerFallWinterSpring outfit and my RedRider Bee-Bee Gun.

JJ5, you're reminding me of "The Christmas Story" and Ralphie and his BeeBee gun! You know, you can buy those leg lamps now ........ I am so tempted to get one for my DH but then he would probably insist on keeping it in the window long after I'd stopped laughing at my joke!

mIkemo--I can't remember where she lived, but it was near the downtown area, because we walked to Woolworth's (this was in the late 1950's). She didn't live there long--it was one of many places she "tried out" after my grandfather died in 1956. I'll see if I can dig something up.
CaliNurse: Your recollection about Howdy Doody reminded me of some "local" favorites. Sally Starr, Larry Ferrarri, Hy Lit, Jerry Blavett, Pete Boyle...
