Funky, not tourist bars-New Orleans

I am bringing someone I'd like to make happy to New Orleans next month. He likes quirky places, good music, and hanging with the locals. Any suggestions?

This place is fun, laid back, non-tourist, right on the streetcar route, great beer selections, pool tables, good food, etc.

Cooter Browns is a college hangout.

It has over 100 types of beers. This is an excellent place to stop and have a unique beer.

Are you college age?

If so, when you go to Cooter Brown's just ask someone there how to get to the other college bars in the area. This is right near Tulane University, and Loyola.

The one and only Funky Butt. The Rock N' Bowl. The MapleLeaf. Sorry but I don't have any addresses.

Also check out Frenchman Street. It's a happening place. Many bars where you can walk in and you'll be up close and personal with some of New Orleans best.

I loved "Mid City Rock N' Bowl" - what a unique idea...pair an old-time bowling alley with live music and a dance floor. We talked to lots of locals there. It's a little out of the way...it was the only time during our long weekend in NO that we used a car.

Definitely Frenchman St. There are about a half dozen funky music spots and some restaurants. Very local, very New Orleans. Cover charges, if there are any, are inexpensive. No specific club to recommend there, just depends on who's playing. I took my 26 year old nephew from L.A. there recently to see Kermit Ruffins. His response to the scene, "Amazing."

If your're located in the Quarter, try Deja Vu (off Bourbon away from the river on Dauphine St.). You'll see everything from people who have been up all night partying to "suits" in for lunch. They're open 24/7 and have the best corn-crawfish soup ever!

Haven't I seen that bar before? :-?
